Sponsored by OSA and SPIE, the European Conferences on Biomedical Optics (ECBO) brought together scientists, engineers, and clinicians who work with optics and photonics to solve problems in medicine and biomedicine. Almost 500 attendees from 42 countries viewed presentations covering novel technology and applications in the areas of advanced microscopy, clinical and biomedical spectroscopy, diffuse optical imaging, molecular imaging, optical coherence tomography and other coherence techniques, therapeutic laser applications, laser-tissue interactions, opto-acoustic methods.


OSA Chief Executive Officer Liz Rogan (center) congratulated Messe Munich on the 40th anniversary of LASER World of Photonics.



On 14 May, OSA Vice President Philip Russell and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG) vice president Wolfgang Sandner honored Prof. H. Jeff Kimble with the 2013 Herbert Walther Award. The presentation was followed by a celebratory lunch sponsored by Messe Munich.



Several ECBO student participants were recognized for their outstanding paper or poster presentations with awards presented by Carl Zeiss and TOPTICA. Wilhelm Kaenders, President of TOPTICA, presents a student award with Juergen Popp, ECBO Co-chair.

Poster sessions will be held Monday (12:30-14:30) and Tuesday (12:00-14:00) on the ground and first level of the ICM. Each session will represent a different set of posters.  In addition to the poster sessions, several poster presenters from selected conferences will give an oral preview of their posters. Poster previews will consist of brief oral presentations accompanied by one slide (Monday 13 May, 11:00-12:45 in Room 11, first Floor ICM and Tuesday 14 May, 10:30-12:00 in Exhibition Hall B1, 1st Floor, Room Hertz).

The ECBO 2013 Technical Program Committee accepted a limited number of postdeadline papers for presentation.  The purpose of the postdeadline sessions is to give participants the opportunity to hear new and significant material in rapidly advancing areas. Only those papers judged to be truly excellent and compelling in their timeliness were accepted.  Light snacks will be served.
