Plastic or polymer optics made by injection molding offer many benefits: they are lighter in weight than a corresponding glass optic, they can be combined with structural mounting features, they are dramatically less costly than ground and polished glass optical elements, and complex aspheric or even random surface shapes can be economically manufactured. It is important for the optical systems designer to understand the benefits and challenges of using polymer optics and to have a grasp of how these types of optics are manufactured. This talk will address the topics of: physical properties of thermoplastics, manufacturing methods, secondary operations, and metrology.
