In Memoriam: Marshall Lloyd Ginter, 1935-2013

ll Lloyd Ginter, an OSA Fellow Emeritus known for his contributions in the areas of electronic structure of atoms and high resolution spectroscopy, passed away at his home in Laurel, MD on 9 December 2013. He was 78.
From 1966-2008, Ginter was a professor of Molecular Physics in the Institute for Physical Science and Technology at the University of Maryland, College Park. In July 2003, he was named Professor Emeritus of Chemical Physics and Optical Physics at the University of Maryland CMNS-Institute for Physical Science & Technology.
Dr. Ginter earned an A.B. from California State University, Chico (1958) and a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University (1961). After receiving his Ph.D., he held research positions at various institutions, including the University of Chicago, Physikalische Anstalt der Universitat Basel, the University of Illinois at Urbana, and the University of Maryland. He was a consultant to the E.O. Hurlburt Center for Space Research, the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, and the U.S. National Bureau of Standards.
An OSA member since 1977, Ginter was elected as a Fellow in 1984. He published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and presented at more than 50 scientific conferences around the world. In 2000, Dr. Ginter was honored as the Outstanding Alumnus from the California State University, Chico. He received an honorary doctorate from the university in 2004.
Ginter is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy Spencer Ginter, two children and five grandchildren.
