Dennis Kelsall:  Oct 1932-Jan 31, 2010

Dennis Kelsall, an OSA member for 47 years, died on January 31, 2010, in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, UK, after a long battle with cancer.  He was 77.

Dennis KelsallKelsall won a State Scholarship to study Physics at the Victoria University of Manchester, obtaining a BSc (Hons) in 1955.  He was a resident of Dalton Hall.  He obtained his PhD in Physics (Optics) from Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London in 1959, studying under Professor H.H. Hopkins.  He also received a DIC in Physics Technical Optics from Imperial College in 1959.

Kelsall worked at SIRA in Chislehurst, Kent, and in 1963 went to RCA (Astro-Electronics Division) in Hightstown, NJ, US.  He later worked at MIT at the Lincoln Laboratory in Massachusetts, working on optical instrumentation in support of defense research.  While in America, he published several papers and obtained patents.

In 1980, Kelsall returned to England.  He retired from British Aerospece in Stevenage.

Kelsall was a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (UK).

In 2003, Kelsall was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and underwent a major operation.  He fought the illness with courage and a positive outlook.

Kelsall leaves a wife, a daughter and a son.
