Anatoly S
ukhorukov, a pioneer and innovator in nonlinear optics, passed away on 10 April 2014 at the age of 78. He headed the department of photonics and microwave physics at Lomonosov Moscow State University, Russia.
During his distinguished career, Sukhorukov made many contributions to modern wave physics, including the theory of nonlinear wave optics and parametric processes, short-pulse dynamics and beam shaping. In 1974, he predicted the discovery of self-focusing and soliton formation through parametric interactions in quadratic nonlinear media, which was confirmed experimentally 20 years later. He was also a dedicated teacher. For 40 years, Sukhorukov taught a year-long course on the theory of waves; his last lecture was in March 2014.
Sukhorukov will be remembered as a true leader, combining inner strength and determination with a kind and caring attitude. He devoted much of his time to mentoring young researchers and shaped the careers of many physicists now working all over the world.
