CLEO is the premier international forum for scientific and technical optics. Uniting the fields of lasers and opto-electronics by bringing together all aspects of laser technology, from basic research to industry applications, CLEO:2016 presents the full range of topics from early stage research to leading-edge applications.

Nitrogen dioxide, a pollutant released by cars and fossil fuel burning power plants, can irritate the lungs, contribute to smog formation, and lead to premature deaths in cities around the world. A recent study, conducted at Kings College, London, UK, for example, found that more than 5,000 premature deaths in London annually could be attributed to nitrogen dioxide pollution. For this reason, it is important to monitor and control pollution gases.

GPS-based navigation, communication systems, electrical power grids and financial networks all rely on the precise time kept by a network of around 500 atomic clocks located around the world.

Control and monitoring of disease-vector insects is critical to global health, as insect vectors spread pathogens among humans, animals and agricultural products, creating worldwide strain on health care and food resources. Mosquito-borne malaria, for example, caused over 200 million infections and over 400,000 deaths in 2015, according to the World Health Organization.

Imagine you could see through blind spots in your car, or that a surgeon’s hand could be invisible during a delicate procedure. Both could be possible one day with a new type of digital invisibility cloak. Although scientists have been working to develop invisibility cloaks for years, they haven’t yet achieved a cloak that hides an object from all viewing angles and that works for all colors of light.
