The Optical Society Announces IONS KOALA 2017

The International OSA Network of Students (IONS) will host the eighth and final IONs meeting of 2017, IONS KOALA. IONS KOALA will be held 26 November – 1 December in Brisbane, Australia. The OSA student chapters at the University of Queensland and Griffith University will co-host the event. The conference will focus on helping early career professionals discover different career opportunities in the optics and photonics field.

The Optical Society to Host Special Events in Celebration of International Day of Light

The science of light improves most every facet of modern life. The UNESCO General Conference officially proclaimed the date of May 16th as the International Day of Light (IDL). The Optical Society (OSA), the leading professional association in optics and photonics, will host a variety of special events to highlight the greater impact of light-based sciences.

UNESCO proclaims May 16th as the International Day of Light

The 39th Session of the UNESCO General Conference has today proclaimed the date of May 16th as the International Day of Light. The proclamation of this annual International Day will enable global appreciation of the central role that light and light-based technologies play in the lives of the citizens of the world in areas of science, technology, culture, education, and sustainable development. The International Day of Light is an enduring follow-up to UNESCO’s highly successful International Year of Light in 2015 that reached over 100 million people in over 140 countries.

The Optical Society to Host Funding Accelerator Meetings

The OSA Industry Development Associates (OIDA) will host one-on-one speed meetings between OIDA members companies and program officers from multiple U.S. Federal agencies at OSA headquarters on 14 November 2017.

The Optical Society Foundation Donates 550 Explore Optics Kits for World Science Day

In recognition of World Science Day, The Optical Society Foundation (OSAF) has donated 550 “Explore Optics” kits to OSA members engaged in community outreach. This significant donation comes with support from OSA industry member, Go!Foton. World Science Day for Peace and Development highlights the important role that science has in society and is celebrated annually on 10 November. World Science Day was proclaimed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2001 and celebrated for the first time in 2002.

Eric Mazur to Deliver Keynote Presentation at ACP Conference

Eric Mazur, President of The Optical Society (OSA), will be one of the featured plenary speakers at the Asia Communications and Photonics Conference (ACP). ACP is the largest conference in the Asia-Pacific region on optical communication, photonics and relevant technologies.

Super-resolution Photoacoustic Imaging Could Allow Scientists to Watch Blood Vessels with Improved R

Researchers have reported an approach to photoacoustic imaging that offers vastly improved resolution, setting the stage for detailed in vivo imaging of deep tissue. The technique is based on computational improvements, so it can be performed with existing imaging hardware, and thus could provide a practical and low-cost option for improving biomedical imaging for research and diagnostics

Wireless Handheld Spectrometer Transmits Data to Smartphone

Spectral images, which contain more color information than is obtainable with a typical camera, reveal characteristics of tissue and other biological samples that can’t be seen by the naked eye. A new smartphone-compatible device that is held like a pencil could make it practical to acquire spectral images of everyday objects and may eventually be used for point-of-care medical diagnosis in remote locations.

New Approach Uses Light Instead of Robots to Assemble Electronic Components

An international team of researchers has developed a new light-based manipulation method that could one day be used to mass produce electronic components for smartphones, computers and other devices. A cheaper and faster way to produce these components could make it less expensive to connect everyday objects — from clothing to household appliances — to the internet, advancing the concept known as the Internet of Things. The micromanipulation technique might also be used to create a safer and faster-charging replacement for mobile device batteries.

The Optical Society to Host Incubator Meeting on Illumination Optics

The Optical Society (OSA) will host an Illumination Optics Incubator meeting 15-17 November at OSA’s Washington, D.C. headquarters. This Incubator welcomes diverse professionals in the illumination optics field including, scientists in optical design theory and optimization, engineers in optical design and software, manufacturers of injection molded optical parts and metallized reflectors and LED manufacturers and system integrators.

The OSA Foundation Announces Location for 2018 Siegman International School on Lasers

The Siegman International School on Lasers, a weeklong, immersive program, providing students with an in-depth learning environment on lasers and their applications has confirmed the locations for the 2018 schools. The 2018 summer school will take place at Backafallsbyn in the Island of Hven in Sweden from 29 July – 4 August, 2018.

Metal-Silicone Microstructures Could Enable New Types of Flexible Optical and Electrical Devices

For the first time, researchers have used a single-step, laser-based method to produce small, precise hybrid microstructures of silver and flexible silicone. This innovative laser processing technology could one day enable smart factories that use one production line to mass-produce customized devices combining soft materials such as engineered tissue with hard materials that add functions such as glucose sensing.
