The Optical Society Opposes Proposed Cuts to Science Funding in 2018 Budget

WASHINGTON —The Optical Society (OSA) issued the following statement on the release of President Donald Trump’s proposed fiscal year 2018 budget. The proposed budget will cut critical investments in research and development at a number of science-related government agencies, including the National Institute of Health, the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Reduced federal funding to these and other agencies will impact optics and photonics enabled innovation and hinder U.S. competitiveness in global marketplace.

“Advances in optics and photonics have also led to more energy efficient products, dramatic improvements in computing capability, critical discoveries in the diagnosis and treatment of illness, increased growth of advanced manufacturing and enhanced security-related products that saves lives,” said Elizabeth Rogan, CEO of The Optical Society. “Continued investment in scientific research and development is a cornerstone for these technological breakthroughs. The Optical Society will continue to work with partner organizations to stress the importance of full funding for federal science agencies to members of Congress on both sides of the aisle.”

A list of the science-related federal agencies affected by the proposed budget has been added on OSA’s Washington Updates page.
