OSA’s Optics & Photonics News Wins 2017 APEX Award

2017 APEX Grand Award for Booklet Series Highlighting The Optical Society Centennial

WASHINGTON – OSA Publishing is pleased to announce that the staff of Optics & Photonics News (OPN), The Optical Society’s news and member magazine, has received a 2017 APEX Grand Award for publication excellence. The award honors a series of four commemorative booklets that the OPN team developed to highlight 100 years of The Optical Society. Together, the booklets tell the story, in photos and other visuals, of OSA’s roots and evolution so far, and where the society — and the optics and photonics community that it serves — are headed in next 100 years.

The APEX Awards — a program sponsored by Communications Concepts that is now in its 29th year — recognizes excellence in publishing by professional communicators. This year’s nationwide competition drew nearly 1,400 entries from corporate and nonprofit publishers, editors, writers, and designers. APEX awards are determined by a judging panel based on excellence in graphic design, editorial content, and the ability to achieve overall communications effectiveness.

“Our goal for the 2016 Centennial booklet series was to present a selection of people, events and technologies that were important to the evolution of optics, optical science, optical engineering, and photonics,” said Stewart Wills, OPN’s editor. “The optical sciences have a long and rich history of enabling technologies. We are grateful for the opportunity to share the research stories of our members.”

The 2016 publication won in the One-of-a-Kind Publications category. All four Centennial booklets are available for download on the OSA Centennial website along with other Centennial publications.
