Details:
The Internet continues to evolve with innovative applications, increasing bandwidth requirements, and changing traffic and usage patterns. This evolution is clearly intertwined with the performance and economics of the underlying optical networks.
 
Since the early 1980s, telecom networks have increasingly depended on a solid foundation of optical technology to provide the cost, reliability, and capacity needed to support new services. The telecom bubble appreciably decreased spending on new optical technology, and hence innovation, imperiling the next cycle of technology and product advancements. Despite the current economy, R&D spending has bounced back, bringing with it renewed emphasis on technical innovation.
 
Technology experts from around the world will converge at OFC/NFOEC to report and discuss how optics will support the next round of network evolution.
 
As the largest and most comprehensive international event for optical communications, this year’s OFC/NFOEC will host the entire scope of optical communications, providing exhibits, live demonstrations and educational activities for all audiences.

  • Optical Innovation – Its Continuing Role as Enabler of Telecom Growth, 12 p.m., Room 3 (press and analysts only)
    This press/analyst-only luncheon will provide an industry perspective of how optics will support the next round of network evolution. Confirmed speakers include:

    • Matthew Ma, vice president, Transport and Network Engineering, Tata Communications Ltd., USA
    • Philippe Morin, president, Metro Ethernet Networks, Nortel, Canada

    • Andrew Odlyzko, professor, School of Mathematics and Digital Technology Center, University of Minnesota, USA
 
  • Symposium on the Future Internet and Its Impact on Next-Generation Optical Networks, 2 – 6:30 p.m.
    This symposium will explore the future Internet, and how it will impact the architecture and technology of next-generation optical networks, from the backbone core to the access edge. Several leaders in the field will present their visions and predictions; they will then respond to questions and comments from the audience.
 
  • Rump Session: The Capacity Crunch Challenge, 7:30 – 9:30 p.m., Room 6D
    Rump session to focus on industry challenges, opportunities and enablers for future capacity and network needs.
