OSA Foundation Establishes New Student Paper Competition to Honor Optics Pioneer Emil Wolf
WASHINGTON, Oct. 20—The OSA Foundation today announced the establishment of the Emil Wolf Outstanding Student Paper Competition. The new competition honors University of Rochester Professor Emil Wolf’s many contributions to science and the Optical Society (OSA). Awards will be given annually in recognition of innovation and research excellence to students presenting their work during OSA’s Annual Meeting, Frontiers in Optics (FiO).
“Establishing the competition this year is a fitting tribute to Professor Wolf, as 2008 marks the 50th consecutive year in which he will present a technical paper at the OSA Annual Meeting,” said Elizabeth Rogan, OSA executive director. “OSA volunteer leaders and staff are looking forward to this opportunity to honor his many years of dedicated service to our organization and the field.”
Students can choose to enter the competition as part of the regular paper submission process for FiO 2009. Two to three finalists will be selected by each OSA Technical Division Committee. Division topics include: Bio-Medical Optics; Fabrication, Design and Instrumentation; Information Acquisition, Processing and Display; Optical Interaction Science; Photonics and Opto-Electronics; and Vision and Color.
Winners, selected based on their presentations during FiO, will receive a complimentary FiO registration, an award stipend of $300 USD and an award certificate. The first prizes will be presented at FiO 2009 in San Jose, Calif.
The University of Rochester’s Physics Department and Institute of Optics have committed support as founding donors of this competition. The OSA Foundation is seeking additional funds to permanently endow this program. Information about the foundation and an online donation form are located on the OSA Foundation Web site.
