CLEO/QELS and PhAST Host Exclusive Press-Only Luncheon to Showcase Optics in Energy Efficiency
Leading Industry Experts Discuss Optics’ Role in Solar Energy, Solid-State Lighting
Creating more efficient energy sources is an international priority. Much discussion is taking place on new technologies, including the benefits of switching to solar energy and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Optics is the backbone for both of these critical energy-saving advancements.
Join us for an exclusive event investigating today’s market, the latest research and commercial developments in creating energy-efficient solar technology and solid-state lighting.

Reducing Energy Consumption through Optical Technologies
-
Research shows that photovoltaic systems (solar technology) are one of the cleanest power-generating technologies available. If these systems were to cover an area equal to 12,000 square miles of land, they could supply all the electricity consumed in the U.S.
- New advancements in “smart” LEDs promise to reduce lighting energy consumption up to 90 percent. LEDs also offer longer life spans. An LED can last up to 100,000 hours, resulting in more than 10 years of continuous use, compared to only 1,000 hours for an incandescent bulb.
*In an additional press luncheon exclusive, Andrew Masters of Santa Clara-based Coherent, Inc. will kick-off the luncheon to present the 2008 PhAST/Laser Focus World Innovation Award winner. The winning technology provides a tailored laser wavelength for superior treatment of macular degeneration.*
Nearly 6,000 researchers from around the world will present the latest breakthroughs in electro-optics, lasers and the application of light waves at the 2008 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics/Quantum Electronics and Laser Science Conference (CLEO/QELS) May 4-9 at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, Calif. Exhibits featuring more than 350 leading electro-optics companies, including San Jose-based Coherent and New Focus, will offer a glimpse of the latest laser technologies and products.
