Third Quarter 2008 Industry News Summary

From fiber suppliers to laser manufacturers, OSA Corporate Member companies are making news with corporate announcements and accolades. nLIGHT Corporation, a supplier of high-power semiconductor lasers and fibers acquired a majority interest in German supplier Optotools GmbH. AFL Telecommunications recently acquired a majority ownership position in The Light Brigade, a leading fiber optic training company and supplier of media and products, located in Tukwila, Wash. Lockheed Martin acquired Aculight Corporation based in Bothell, Wash. Aculight is a privately-held company primarily focused on providing laser-based solutions for national defense and aerospace customers. The new business unit will report to Lockheed Martin's Maritime Systems & Sensors business in Akron, Ohio. Goodrich Corporation acquired the Chicago Aerial Industries and Pacific Optical Division assets of Recon/Optical, Inc., a leading provider of low-to-medium altitude airborne reconnaissance cameras and optical products for the homeland security and military market.

Several Corporate Members have a lot to celebrate this year. Three companies were the recipients of R&D Magazine’s prestigious R&D 100 Awards. QED Technologies won for its Subaperture Stitching Interferometer for Aspheres, which the magazine cited as “a turnkey precision measurement tool uniquely capable of measuring complex surfaces.” Corning, Inc. won for its ClearCurve bendable optical fiber. Tessera Technologies’ OptiML wafer-level camera won an R&D 100 Award as well. The camera also received Advanced Packaging Magazine's Novel Package Design award in July.New Scale Technologies, Inc. was named for the second year in a row to Inc.’s annual listing of the 5,000 fastest-growing private companies in the United States at number 650. The Victor, N.Y. manufacturer of miniature piezoelectric motors and motion systems also ranked number 18 among the list’s top 100 computer and electronics companies, with a three-year sales growth of 515 percent. TeraXion Inc. was selected as one of Deloitte’s Technology Fast 50, a ranking of Canada’s 50 fastest-growing technology companies based on percentage revenue growth over five years. TeraXion’s 791 percent increase in revenue from 2003 to 2007 earned the company a spot in 25th place.

In other Corporate Member news, transceiver research company LightCounting released their latest transceiver market report, which calls 2008 the “year of change” for the market. The report states, among other findings, that Ethernet and DWDM will drive the market from 2008 to 2011 and low-cost 10-GigE SPF+ modules will dominate data communications, as evidenced by their stellar first year, with sales already eclipsing all other 10-GigE form factors.
