It’s tradeshow season and with that comes the opportunity for companies to showcase their latest products and innovations.  OSA corporate members are leading the way in fiber optics components design and manufacturing, photonics applications, software offerings and telecom product development.
Setting a new benchmark in high-resolution OTDR, Luna Technologies has developed the OBR 4400, an ultra-high resolution optical time domain reflectometer, which provides unmatched diagnostic capabilities in locating and troubleshooting problem areas in modern fiber optic components and assemblies (splices, breaks, connectors, bends, hot-spots, etc.).
Both RSoft Design Group and Lamba Research Corporation continue to upgrade their software offerings for the optics and photonics industry.  RSoft announced the release of a new advanced CAD system for the RSoft Component Design Suite, featuring a new 3-D editing capability.  Lambda released the new and improved version of the lens design software OSLO, which further advances customizability for the user.

Components developer/manufacturer Axsun Technologies continues to expand the industry-leading OMx optical monitor product line, with the introduction of the industry’s first high resolution C+L Band Optical Monitor.  The OMxCL provides double the optical bandwidth of current technology (up to 100 nm).
While Axsun is expanding its current product family, CIP announced the development of a new family of reflective semiconductor optical amplifiers, designed to radically boost performance of existing EPON/GPON technologies.  Finally on the product front: in the quest for a low-cost alternative to current 10G component designs, Xponent Photonics has made available its new 10G MSA Xtreme Receiver with a production-quantity price of less than $50.
Acquisitions and other business agreements continue to materialize in the optics and photonics industry.  Coherent, Inc. acquired laser diode-maker Nuvonyx last month.  JDSU has acquired two companies since February – Picolight, designer/manufacturer of optical pluggable transceivers, and broadband test solutions manufacturer Innocor, which was announced earlier this month.  Santur Corporation announced a strategic long term supply agreement with StrataLight, in which Santur will supply the company with widely tunable lasers for 40G.
In other news, Corning, Inc., along with the OSA Foundation, announced the establishment of a new student award competition designed to recognize future leaders in the field of optical communications.  The first award will be given at OFC/NFOEC 2008.  Finally, optical switch maker Polatis, Inc. recently appointed two senior executives to its worldwide sales force.  Garland Shinn and Vernon Brokke joined Polatis in March as directors of sales in the Test and Measurement Group and Federal Systems Group, respectively.
