CLEO 2017 Concludes with Strong Attendance; Focus on Breakthrough Research in Laser Science and Commercial Applications

CLEO closed with more than 4,000 attendees, 200 exhibitors and over 2,000 research presentations.

OSA Announces the 2017 Election Slate

Learn more about the candidates running in the 2017 OSA Elections for positions on the OSA Board of Directors beginning on 1 January 2018. The OSA Election for the 2018 Vice President and three Directors at Large will open 28 June 2017 and will continue through 25 August 2017. OSA Frontiers in Optics + Laser Science APS/DLS: Experience it Anew

Section Title

Frontiers in Optics, the OSA Annual Meeting, encompasses the breadth of optical science and engineering and provides an atmosphere that fosters the exchange of information between those working on fundamental research and those looking for solutions to engineering problems.

For 2017, the conference has been thoughtfully revised, combining the best of the past and adding vital, innovative elements. New elements include:

Date and Location:
We can't for you to experience the new and improved FiO, so we've scheduled it in September, one month early. Plus, the new meeting location in Washington, D.C., guarantees efficient and affordable access (with three airports servicing the Greater Washington area) and proximity to funding agencies, leading science organizations and research institutions.

Conference Themes:
The Technical Conference is organized around four themes that leverage the intersection between science and applications— the end result is intended to illustrate the research within the technology. The four themes:

- Automotive
- Nanophotonics and Plasmonics
- Optics in Computing
- Virtual Reality and Augmented Vision

Visionary Speakers:
Plenary and invited speakers will still be an essential part of the technical program. However, we're introducing a new category, visionary speakers, to the mix. These individuals come from within and beyond the optics and photonics community — each equipped to provide insight into cutting-edge advances related to the four conference themes.

Format:
As befitting the OSA Annual Meeting, all members will be given the ability to present a contributed paper. New for 2017 is the introduction of Rapid-fire Oral Presentations, in which a select number of poster presenters offer a preview of key results from their research; and virtual posters, which transform poster presentations into experiential, interactive sessions.

Laser Science:
American Physical Society's (APS) Division of Laser Science (DLS) provides an important forum for presenting the latest work on laser applications and development, spanning a broad range of topics in physics, biology and chemistry.

In collaboration with colleagues at OSA, DLS provides thorough coverage of mutually interesting topics in a number of joint sessions. Session schedules are coordinated to encourage attendees with their intellectual wanderings among DLS, OSA and joint sessions.

OSA Traveling Lecturer Spotlight: Andrea Armani

As a professor, I usually speak to the audiences of my colleague’s students. This lecture was rather different. The Columbia Section is primarily industry members, though academics are encouraged to attend the lectures. Given that the majority of the members have full-time jobs, the lecture was on a Friday night, and included a social hour along with dinner. In other words, it was a completely different format and structure. But this change opened up the possibility for new types of interactions between the attendees. This was particularly important given the board demographic distribution of attendees.

As a result of diverse audience, the intellectual environment was extremely unique and discussions were wide-ranging. Additionally, the students from OSU and University of Oregon who made the trek, probably gained just as much from the networking opportunities with other attendees as from my lecture - and quite possibly more. It was wonderful to see a chapter turn a lecture into a social and mentoring event, where established experts in field interacted with students and young professionals.

Paul F. Forman Team Engineering Excellence Award

Submission Deadline: 2 July

The Paul F.Forman Team Engineering Excellence Award recognizes team technical achievements such as product engineering, process and software development, and patent development, as well as contributions to society such as engineering education, publication and management, and furthering public appreciation of optical engineering. Submit a team nomination before the deadline.

OSA Treasurer's Award

Submission Deadline: 10 August

The OSA Treasurer's Award recognizes an OSA staff member who makes significant contributions to organizational excellence, promotes and enacts innovative solutions or exemplifies inspirational leadership.

John Tyndall Award

Submission Deadline: 10 August

The John Tyndall Award recognizes an individual who has made outstanding contributions in any area of optical-fiber technology, including optical fibers themselves, the optical components used in fiber systems, as well as transmission systems and networks using fibers. This award is co-sponsored by The Optical Society and IEEE Photonics Society. Nominations for the 2018 award should be submitted to IEEE Photonics Society.

Herbert Walther Award

Submission Deadline: 10 August

The Herbert Walther Award recognizes distinguished contributions in quantum optics and atomic physics as well as leadership in the international scientific community. This award is co-sponsored by OSA and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG). Nominations for the 2018 award should be submitted to DPG.

The Mostly Successful LED Lighting Market

OIDA distributed an assessment of LED lighting to members last month that illustrates the success of government efforts and of the market to reduce the price and increase the volume of LED lighting. LED lighting has passed a "tipping point" such that further penetration is inevitable. Continued sales help drive down manufacturing costs, which allows for lower prices to customers, further driving up sales in a virtuous cycle.

The report, which is publicly available from the National Academies Press, provides Phase Two to an earlier 2013 report. The combined reports assess the U.S. Department of Energy's program in LED lighting, which is currently funded at about $24 million per year. The U.S. government's aim is for a more energy efficient economy, including the use of LEDs for lighting and solar cells for energy generation.

The Problem-Based Approach to Biophotonics Commercialization

The best approach to commercializing biophotonics technology is to start by examining a problem that health care providers face every day, and work with a team to find a solution. That may seem obvious, but it's not used widely or effectively. This was the message of a session on the commercialization of biophotonics at OSA's Biophotonics Congress in San Diego, California, USA on 5 April 2017.

Moderating the panel was Gabriela Apiou, PhD, of Harvard Medical School and the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. The session featured two research physicians with real-world problems that beg for solutions.

Canada's Photonics Industry Ranks Well Globally

Canada is among the top 10 producers in optics and photonics products, and yet is not widely recognized for its rank. It’s photonics community is in proportion to its population, compared to the European Union member countries and the U.S. This is one of the messages that OIDA will bring to a presentation on the outlook for photonics at a session on photonics commercialization at Photonics North on Wednesday, 7 June 2017.

Canada has optics and photonics employment of about 25,000, for a country with total employment of about 18 million. By comparison, OIDA estimates U.S. photonics employment at 385,000 (for total employment of 153 million) and European photonics employment (excluding Russia) at 322,000 (for total employment of 236 million). The per capital concentration of optics and photonics employment, called the location quotient, places Canada at about the same level as Europe, but less than the U.S.
