Child Care Support Available for OSA Conferences

OSA is committed to making participation in the Society rewarding and enjoyable for everyone in the OSA Community. Grants of up to four hundred dollars (US$ 400) per family, per calendar year, are available to assist OSA Members who are bringing children to FiO 2017 or who incur additional expenses in leaving them at home (e.g., extra day care or babysitting services). Members are encouraged to complete this application at least 30 days prior to the start of the conference.

Grant recipients are solely responsible for their choice of child care provider. OSA does not endorse any child care providers.

Traveling Lecturer Spotlight: John Ballato

I had the great privilege to speak as an OSA Traveling Lecturer to the OSA Student Chapter at the Politecnico di Torino (Torino, Italy). I have known some of the Politecnico faculty for many years and am well aware of their international reputation in glass, optical fibers, and telecommunications. Had this simply been a visit to speak with faculty and give a more conventional departmental colloquium, it still would have been worth the trip. However, as any professor will tell you, there is nothing like being invited by students, to speak and interact with students! This is why professors are professors. The student chapter took the lead, organized an entire half day program where I spoke on the future of optical fibers and the role of new materials in that future. My talk was followed by talks from 2 Politecnico professors on the research being performed there, then discussions with the students (about 20 of them!) about their work and professional development, a lunch you can only have in Italy, and a wonderful tour. In addition to technical topics, I made tried to impress upon the students the central and critical role of both the OSA and of student chapters in their future careers and professional development. To this day, I stay in touch with those I went to school with and call on them when my students are looking for jobs or collaborators. Programs like the OSA Traveling Lecturer program are wonderful opportunities to connect scholars with students and represents a link between present and future.

The Optics-Enabled Machine Tool Market is Doing Well in 2017

The mood was good at the Laser World of Photonics exhibition in Munich in June, from the exhibit floor and OSA-managed conference rooms to the beer garden receptions. OSA Industry Development Associates (OIDA) anticipated a good response, based on financial reports and conversations with the companies we follow. The financial trends which led to this assumption are shown in the first figure, where OIDA's estimate for revenues of optics and photonics companies in 2017 has already started off better than the start in 2016. (Every year has some seasonal behavior, such that Q4 ends high and "resets" lower in the subsequent Q1, so OIDA compares Q1 2017 to the Q1 of the previous year.) The growth is not just in market share of the companies we track, as other companies report similar sentiments, and companies express frustration that they are having difficulty finding enough qualified workers to keep up with production.
