 Futurist Michio Kaku to Speak at Light The Future Speaker Series at FiO

Michio Kaku, futurist and theoretical physicist, City College of New York, will deliver a keynote address on Optics of the Future: Exploring the Universe and the Brain. Sir Peter L. Knight, Emeritus Professor, Imperial College London, OSA Fellow, and 2004 OSA President will serve as master of ceremonies. This program will also feature a special Ignite the Future segment where predictions of what’s next in optics will be given by Nobel Prize winners, Nicolaas Bloembergen, Robert F. Curl, Roy J. Glauber, John L. Hall, W.E. Moerner, William D. Phillips and David J. Wineland.

Congratulations to the Advanced LIGO Engineering Team - 2016 Paul F. Forman Team Engineering Excellence Award Winner
 The Advanced LIGO Engineering Team will receive the award during the plenary session at OSA’s Annual Meeting, Frontiers in Optics (FiO) on 19 October in Rochester, New York, USA. Dennis Coyne and GariLynn Billingsley, California Institute of Technology, and Stuart Aston and Richard McCarthy, LIGO Livingston Observatory, will be accepting the award on behalf of the team. The engineering team was comprised of individuals from a number of research organizations including LIGO Laboratory‐‐Caltech, LIGO Laboratory‐‐MIT, LIGO Laboratory—LIGO Hanford Observatory, LIGO Laboratory‐‐LIGO Livingston Observatory, Albert Einstein Institute and Laser Zentrum Hannover, Glasgow University, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Stanford University, University of Florida. They are being recognized for innovative engineering creating the most sensitive measurement instrument ever built, leading to the first direct detection of gravitational waves. The Optical Society Congratulates the OSA Members Elected to U.S. National Academy of Engineering
The Optical Society announced the names of seven members elected to the 2016 class of the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE). Members elected were honored at an induction ceremony on 9 October at the National Academy of Sciences, Washington, USA.
“NAE membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research and development,” said Elizabeth Rogan, CEO of The Optical Society. “On behalf of The Optical Society, I would like to congratulate our members in this year’s class, including our 2016 President Alan Willner. They are pioneers in new fields of engineering technologies which impact our lives daily.”

Peer-led review is the cornerstone of OSA’s publishing program. OSA Vice-President at JSAPs 77th Autumn Meeting in Japan
The 5th OSA/JSAP Joint English-language Symposium took place 13–16 September during the 77th Autumn Meeting of the Japan Society of Applied Physics (JSAP) in Niigata, Japan.
OSA Vice-President Ian Walmsley participated in the symposium, delivering a talk on photonic quantum networks and hosting a special member reception to celebrate the OSA Centennial.

OSA Traveling Lecturer Spotlight: Eric W. Van Stryland
“My longtime dedication to OSA as my professional home, and my interest in helping students got me involved in the Traveling Lecturer Program, and I was lucky enough to be invited to the University of Aveiro, OSA Student Chapter in the beautiful coastal town of Aveiro, Portugal. The students did a wonderful job of hosting me and my wife, particularly my primary contact, Álvaro Almeida. The meeting they organized was very enlightening about the challenges faced in getting Portugal to develop and expand its photonics industry and ways to forge good university/industry partnerships. They named it “OPTOFUSION- Conference on Optics in Industry”. Apart from learning about optics research at the university and especially at the Instituto de Telecomunicações and how photonics is growing in Portugal, I must admit to being amazed at how the roads and sidewalks are all made with stones and tiles with designs (quite beautiful!), and how almost everyone speaks English (the TV is not dubbed but has subtitles). I greatly enjoyed my interactions there and am impressed by the conference the students organized and the state-of-the-art research they are performing. Portugal is truly a unique and interesting place.
I think the Traveling Lecturer Program is a great way for students, particularly overseas, to get internationally known speakers in diverse areas of optics and photonics to come see what they are doing. And they get to meet optics and photonics experts, interact, and learn about the new areas of research.”

Key Obama Administration Official to Speak on Export Control Reform at Laser Congress

Kevin J. Wolf, the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Export Administration of the United States Department of Commerce, will be speaking at OSA Laser Congress. Interested parties in the Boston area are invited to attend this special complimentary lunch session. Mr. Wolf will discuss the rewrite of Category XII of the United States Munitions List which encompasses fire control, range finder, optical and guidance and control equipment that the United States considers critical to national security. The goal of the proposed rule change was to move dual-use items with both military and commercial applications from the State Department USML list to the less restrictive Commerce Control list, thereby reducing or eliminating confusion and jurisdictional classifications between the USML and CCL. After several years of work, the Administration released the final rule on 12 October, 2016. Participants will have the opportunity to hear firsthand from the Assistant Secretary the changes and impact this rule will have on the optics and photonics industry.

Call for Nominations – 2017 Advocate of Optics Recognition

Do you know a public official who has been a champion of optics? Tell us about him or her. Each year, OSA’s Advocate of Optics Recognition commends an outstanding public official who demonstrates leadership in support of the advancement of the science of light. The Public Policy Committee is soliciting nominations from OSA members and will select a candidate based on his/her commitment to science and science policy, level of familiarity with optics and photonics, level of interaction with OSA or OSA members in the past year, and record of consistent support of science, optics and photonics.
Please submit your nomination to public-policy@osa.org. Your entry should include the nominee’s name, title, country, and reason why this person is being nominated.

Submission Deadline: 6 January 2017
Combine your interest in policy with your science background. Congressional Science Policy Fellows spend one year on Capitol Hill working as legislative assistants on the staff of a member of U.S. Congress or Congressional Committee. Applicants must have a Ph.D. by the start of the fellowship, 1 September 2017, to be eligible; mid and late career applicants are also encouraged to apply. In addition to being a great opportunity for young professionals, it is also an ideal way to spend an academic sabbatical or leave of absence from a company.

"Lights. Camera. Optics!" Video Your Optics Vision of 2030 and Win $500 or a Go-Pro Camera
Using the theme "Light the Future," create a video of no more than 90 seconds in length demonstrating a problem optics could solve by 2030, ideally using research you have conducted or a product in development/new application. Videos must be posted onto the user's YouTube page, and the link submitted to LightTheFuture@osa.org by 28 October 2016. Finalist videos will be posted on the OSA YouTube page for viewing and liking between 1 November and 15 November. Videos will be evaluated on both likes/shares and the ability to share a compelling vision of the future for optics technologies. Science celebrity Ira Flatow will judge finalists.

The 100-Year View of Photonics, Part 2—The Century of Big Markets
Last month's OSA Industry Development Associates (OIDA) newsletter looked back on the optics and photonics market and its impact on society. The market has scaled up from a small industry over a century ago to production worth over $400 billion per year. It's growing more slowly today, but the next century will be notable for the large absolute size of the photonics industry.
What remains? We need only to look to a few major forces in society to see where the next big opportunities are. The United Nations estimates the world population at 7.3 billion today, and its forecast plateaus near 11 billion by 2100 in the shape of a sigmoid or "S" curve, shown in the figure. Like the world population, the photonics market is also passing its steepest growth, given that it is the sum of many smaller markets, several of which are already near saturation.
Picture yourself in that world generations from now, looking back at today. What would be different in that world?

The Semiconductor Roadmap is Dead—Long Live the New Roadmaps!
In the June OIDA newsletter we reflected on the demise of the famous semiconductor roadmap, the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS). Its last revision was in 2013, 21 years after its first report. This month we want to highlight some important and overlapping efforts that are filling its place.
