 Ray Kurzweil, inventor, author and futurist, discussed the law of accelerating returns for technology and its impact on business and society during OSA’s Light the Future program at CLEO.
Dr. Steven Chu, Nobel Laureate, former U.S. Secretary of Energy and OSA Fellow and Honorary Member, joined Mr. Kurzweil on stage for an engaging discussion on topics that included artificial intelligence and predictions for the future.

Join the “Write the Future” story contest and share your vision of optics and photonics. To enter, write a short fiction story in 300 – 500 words on the future of our field. The winner will receive a cash prize of $500 as well as a free trip to OSA’s 100th annual meeting, Frontiers in Optics, 17– 21 October in Rochester, New York, USA, where the winner will be recognized. In addition, the story will be published in OPN. All entries will receive a commemorative gift.

Robert Alfano Patents Biomedical Supercontinuum Light Method
Robert Alfano has been awarded a U.S. patent (No. 20160128775A1) for a method of using supercontinuum (SC) light for medical and biological applications. The patent covers a method and apparatus for producing SC light. SC light has a short coherence light and a bandwidth broader than any femtosecond laser, making it suitable for optical coherence tomography, according to the patent application.
Alfano holds 114 patents, has raised $64 million in photonics research funding and has mentored 56 doctoral students at the City College of New York since 1972, where he is currently a professor of science and engineering. He was recently honored with the Optical Society's Michael S. Feld Biophotonics Award.

OSA Fellows Named Finalists for the 2016 Blavatnik Awards
OSA Fellows, Andrea Alù and Aydogan Ozcan are two out of the 31 named finalists for the 2016 Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists. The honorees come from diverse disciplines spanning life sciences, physical sciences and engineering and chemistry. Each finalist will compete for three spots as the 2016 Blavatnik National Laureates, which carries an unrestricted cash prize of $250,000, the largest prize of its kind for early-career scientists.
The annual Blavatnik Awards, established by the Blavatnik Family Foundation in 2007 and administered by the New York Academy of Sciences, celebrate exceptional young researchers who drive the next generation of scientific innovation.

The Optical Society Congratulates OSA Members on their Election Into the National Academy of Sciences
OSA congratulates Dr. Martin M. Fejer, Stanford University, California, USA; Dr. Stephen R. Forrest, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA; and Dr. Stefan W. Hell, Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry, Göttingen, Germany,on their election to The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) on Tuesday, 3 May 2016. The award recognizes distinguished members of the scientific community that have contributed novel research. The newly elected fellows join 2,288 NAS active members and 464 foreign associates.

2016 Royal Society Class Inducts Polina Bayvel
 Polina Bayvel, OSA Fellow and Professor of Optical Communications and Networks in the department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, will become an elected fellow of the Royal Society at a formal ceremony in July. Professor Bayvel was elected to become a fellow of the Royal Society this year after securing more than 2/3 of the votes. Each year the Royal Society elects up to 52 new fellows who have made a substantial contribution to the improvement of natural knowledge, including mathematics, engineering science and medical science. This is another recognition to Professor Bayvel’s major contributions to the investigation and design of high-bandwidth, multi-wavelength optical communication networks.

OSA Traveling Lecturer Spotlight: Martijn De Sterke
 Martijn De Sterke, University of Sydney, Sydney, Australia
"I was fortunate enough to combine visits to two different student chapters in a single trip to India. I was able to visit the Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute (CGCRI) in Kolkata, a very impressive organization and then jumped on a train to Dhanbad to the Indian School of Mines (ISM). I also went to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur where, on a weekend day, the students showed me around Bodh Gaya which is one of the most important and sacred Buddhist pilgrimage centre in the world.
At both universities I gave presentations about my research on complete light absorption in ultrathin layers and about scientific publishing. I spent much of my time talking informally to students about their research which, for me, was the best part of the entire visit and gave me the opportunity to appreciate the full spectrum of the research that is being carried out. I was struck by the quality of the students and by their knowledge of the scientific literature. Many thanks to the presidents of the student chapters at ISM and IIT KGP, Vikash Barnwal and Abhijit Roy for making the local arrangements and OSA for sponsoring the trip."

OSA Publishing Continues to Dominate the Optics Category in 2016 Edition of the Journal Citation Reports® (JCR)
The Optical Society (OSA) is pleased to announce that its journal portfolio again leads the Optics category in the latest edition of the Journal Citation Reports® (JCR) (Thomson Reuters, 2016). Not only does OSA remain the foremost publisher in the field with the largest number of articles published (35%), but its high quality content also received the most citations (40%) of the 90 titles included in this year’s Optics category.
Optica, OSA Publishing’s journal for high-impact research has been added to this year’s Journal Citation Report with a partial Impact Factor (IF) score of 5.205. Photonics Research, OSA Publishing’s partner journal with Chinese Laser Press, also debuts in the JCR with a partial IF of 3.179. Additionally, Advances in Optics and Photonics continues to grow in citations and has received an increased IF of 12.368, up 22% from 2015.

African Women's Research Fellowships Available
Application Deadline: 20 July
The Women in Africa Foundation is launching the second edition of the SCIENCE BY WOMEN programme with the aim to promote African women’s leadership in scientific research and technology transfer and to foster the capacity of the research centres in their home countries.
The programme will fund seven sabbatical fellowships for senior African women researchers to enjoy stays at 7 selected institutes located in Spain. One of those 7 fellowships will be hosted by ICFO. Suitable backgrounds of the researchers include Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry and Engineering.

The sessions will immediately precede Optics and Photonics Japan 2016 (OPJ2016) and will explore the latest advances in the fields of plasmonics and digital photonics. All OSA members are invited to submit papers for oral or poster presentation! The Abstract Deadline is 1 August 2016.

What the Brexit Means to Photonics
The vote by Britons to exit the European Union means both a little and a lot to photonics. A little because the U.K. is just a small part of the global photonics industry (about 4%), and its strengths in military and other photonics technologies will continue for the time being. A lot because many consequences are unquantifiable and long term. But most of the effects will be confined to UK and Europe. Here’s OIDA’s view so far.

OIDA’s Executive Forum at the Laser Applications Conference (LAC)

The Laser Applications Conference (LAC) is a new industry conference on Laser Applications at the OSA Lasers Congress. The conference will also include an OIDA Executive Forum on 3 November. The OIDA Executive Forum provides attendees with an exclusive opportunity to hear insider perspectives in an uncensored environment, while participating in high-level networking.
The LAC will focus on two main topic areas; Materials Processing and High Intensity Lasers for Applications. Materials Processing will include advanced applications for industrial use. High Intensity Lasers for Applications will include applications in defense, scientific research, and energy markets. One of the themes of this meeting will be to initiate discussions on what engineering and production advances are needed to translate promising technological advances into marketable products.

OIDA's Mid-Year Photonics Estimate
OIDA presented its mid-year estimate for optics and photonics production at CLEO with a cautious but hopeful projection for the rest of 2016. Using early results, OIDA currently forecasts a flat year for photonics, revised downward from our forecast earlier this year.
