OSA Centennial

OSA’s centennial year is coming to an end, and what an amazing year it has been! Our high profile exhibit, website, Light the Future Speaker Series, contests, publicity and OSA100 branded parties have all contributed to an elevated visibility for OSA. Here are the highlights for this month.

PayneProf. Sir David Payne, University of Southampton, Highfield, and OSA Fellow, gave a public presentation discussing Photonics Advances in Telecommunications at Photonics India, last week.  He highlighted the enabling technologies and noted that the Optical Fiber Internet is perhaps the greatest gift photonics gave to mankind. He talked about bridging the digital divide by providing accessible, affordable global communications. You can view his talk here.

OSA100 on the Road - The OSA Exhibit has made its way around the globe this year.  It was recently featured at the Joint 13th Asia-Pacific Physics Conference and 22nd Australian Institute of Physics Congress, incorporating the Australian Optical Society Conference in Brisbane, Australia

Reminder! Don’t forget to stop by the OSA booth during Photonics West. See you there!

Check out the events page for more on the road coverage and head over to the centennial bookshelf  to download the commemorative booklets from OPN, and for a look at the most cited articles from the past 100 years.  The last Century of highlights from OSA, science and politics on our timeline can be seen here. You can also download OSA’s Century of Optics (a chapter or the entire book) here.

Stop by the Stories section of OSA.org/100 to watch OSA Members talk about what inspired them to get into optics, what excites them about their work and what OSA means to them. This section also features memories and photos submitted by OSA Members.

OSA Congratulates the LIGO Team on Winning the Breakthrough Prize and the “2016 Top 100 Global Thinkers” Award
Recognizing 25 Years of Optical Coherence Tomography

Since its first appearance approximately 25 years ago, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) has undergone multiple generations of rapid technology development and has become a standard of care in diagnostic technology and in several medical specialties. Many of these developments were first described in OSA journals and meetings.

To commemorate this milestone, OSA will be publishing a special OCT 25th Anniversary Feature Issue in Biomedical Optics Express in early 2017. In the meantime, we invite you to learn more about the impact of OCT within the optics community by browsing recent articles published in this topic area. Additionally, you can watch this series of short videos produced by our sister society, ARVO (Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology).

Barrera Chosen as One of the Future Leaders of STS Forum 2016

Professor John Fredy Barrera, 2015 Class of OSA Senior Members, was recently chosen as one of the Future Leaders of the STS Forum 2016. The Future Leaders Program aims to bring together promising young leaders from around the world in order to attend the STS Forum Annual Meeting.  This year's STS Forum was attended by 1,200 participants from 100 countries, including Nobel laureates, academics, policy makers, business leaders and journalists, among others. Barrera is the coordinator of the Optics and Photonics research group at Universidad de Antioquia. He is also the only Latin American contestant to be given this recognition.

Honor Your Mentor!

In recognition of the importance mentors play in shaping our lives, the OSA Foundation (OSAF) has created an “Honor Your Mentor” program allowing members of the community to publicly recognize someone who has served as a mentor. The goal of the program is to honor great mentors and remind us all of the important roles mentors have in our careers and lives.

Traveling Lecturer Spotlight: Volker Sorger

Antigone MarinoVolker Sorger
Assistant Professor and Director
Orthogonal Physics Enabled Nanophotonics (OPEN) Laboratory

“I arrived at Tucson International Airport and was greeted with a smile from Tucson city’s desert sun. After a short Uber ride, I walked near the green lawns of University of Arizona just to find the student union building where IONS Tucson was being held. Ben, a member of the student chapter greeted me warmly and helped me set up the AV and computer for my presentation. A few minutes later, the IONS attendees entered the auditorium.

My presentation, "From Engineer to Career" was well received by students and alumni alike. The presentation touched on anthropological and fundamental 'rule' which governs our bodies, inter-human relationships, and ultimately our professional lives. We also discussed Myers-Briggs tests, which provides personality profiles. One student approached me afterwards and said that she found it interesting to see that one’s personality profile could change at various stages in life (I had shown a timeline/progression of my changes throughout life). The presentation was then followed by casual conversation over lunch.

After the event, I visited the College of Optics to meet with some more students. Overall, this was an insightful conference from both a personal and professional [technical] standpoint. Thank you for the invitation Arizona, and thank you OSA for sponsoring it."
