OSA President-Elect, Alan Willner will be heading down under to present the OSA-AOS Student Prize and celebrate the International Year of Light. ANZCOP 2015 will include a wide variety of plenary talks, including the Advanced LIGO project and the latest developments in bio-photonics. OSA Fellow and 2015 Frew Fellow, Ursula Keller, will also be giving a talk.

The OSA Outstanding Reviewers recognition is given annually and is meant to commend the top reviewers for their outstanding peer review efforts over the past year. Recipients were chosen by the Editors-in-Chief of OSA's journals from scores of nominations provided by their Topical and Associate Editors.

The German Society of Applied Optics (DGaO) and the International Commission for Optics (ICO) jointly invite you to the 117th Annual Meeting of the DGaO 17–21 May 2016, in Hanover, Germany. The Public Policy Committee is soliciting nominations from OSA Members for the 2016 Advocate of Optics. The Advocate of Optics Recognition commends an outstanding public official who demonstrates leadership in support of the advancement of the science of light. The committee will select the candidate based on his/her commitment to science and science policy, level of familiarity with optics and photonics, level of interaction with OSA or OSA Members in the past year, and record of consistent support of science, optics and photonics.

The Logic Analysis Tool (LAT) Team received the 2015 award during the plenary session at OSA’s Annual Meeting, Frontiers in Optics (FiO). The group included researchers and scientists from MIT, Photon Spot, Inc., DCG Systems and IBM, and was led by Dr. Euan Ramsay of DCG Systems. The team developed an optics-based LAT that detects the time resolved emission of light from switching transistors within integrated circuits, operating down to .5V, thus creating a new tool for device analysis in advanced process technologies.

2016 Tyndall Award Winner Announced
OSA and IEEE Photonics Society announced that OSA Fellow Alan H. Gnauck, Alcatel Lucent, is the recipient of the 2016 John Tyndall Award. The Tyndall Award, endowed by Corning, Inc., recognizes outstanding contributions in optical-fiber technology. Gnauck will be recognized at OFC 2016 for sustained pioneering research contributions that drove commercialization of high-speed, high-capacity lightwave communication systems.

Gregory Quarles presented with the Memorial D.S. Rozhdestvensky Medal
 After presenting a series of lectures at the 9th International Conference of Young Scientists and Specialists "Optics-2015" in St Petersburg, Russia from 12-14 October, and to the International School on Photonics and Optoinformatics 2015, Gregory Quarles was presented with the Memorial D.S. Rozhdestvensky medal by the Russian Optical Society Presidium and the Central Council members. "I was deeply honored to have the medal presented by the Executive Director of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the distinguished professor, Vladimir Arpishkin. Being able to address such an esteemed audience, and connecting with a tremendously eager and energetic student body left me very inspired and humbled", said Gregory.

Looking to combine your interest in policy with your science background? Become an OSA Congressional Fellow. OSA hosts two fellowships – one with the Materials Research Society and the other with SPIE. The program is a unique opportunity for scientists and engineers to gain experience in public policy and to help influence decision makers. Congressional Fellows spend one year on Capitol Hill working as special legislative assistants on the staff of a member of Congress or Congressional Committee.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. by September 1, 2016 to be eligible. Mid and late-career applicants are encouraged to also apply. A competitive salary and a health insurance/travel stipend are provided.

The International Commission for Optics (ICO) and Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste (ICTP) are seeking nominations for the 2015 ICO/ICTP Gallieno Denardo Award. This award is presented to a young researcher (under 40 years old) from a developing nation who is active in optics research and has contributed to the promotion of research activities in their own or another developing nation.

In this online learning session, Paul Gordon Brown, PhD candidate at Boston College, will discuss what it means to have a digital reputation and some of the do’s and don’ts of posting on social media. Participants will also leave with practical examples of how to use social media and web-based tools to enhance their online presence, grow an audience, and engage with colleagues. Some of the tools explored include: Twitter, LinkedIn, Academia.edu, Reddit, and portfolio and content publishing tools (such as About.me, Wordpress, etc.).

Optics Express submissions now require a brief statement (less than 200 words, excluding references) explaining the novelty, potential impact and relevance of a submission and clearly stating why the paper is suitable for Optics Express. This statement will not be published in the article, but will aid reviewers and editors in assessing a paper and by placing the work in the broader context of the existing literature and the authors’ previous contributions.
