OSA Journal Portfolio Leads Optics Category in Total Citations and Articles

OSA is pleased to announce that its full portfolio of journals again leads the Optics category in the total number of citations and total number of articles published, according to the 2014 edition of the Journal Citation Reports® (Thomson Reuters, 2014). This edition provides a combination of impact and influence metrics from 2013 data and shows that, in total, OSA published 34 percent of all articles in the Optics category, and its journals account for 41 percent of all citations. Is your peer-reviewed optics research among the most exciting to emerge over the past 12 months? If so, we want to hear about it! Send a 500-word summary of your work—along with an image or video highlighting your results—to Optics & Photonics News (OPN), The Optical Society’s monthly news magazine, and your work may be selected to appear in OPN’s special December issue on Optics in 2014.

The deadline for submissions is 31 August 2014. Submitting is easy, through Prism, OSA’s online submission system. You will be notified about whether your submission has been accepted for inclusion in the issue by early October. Find out more on the OPN website.

Don’t Forget to Cast Your Ballot in the OSA Election!

Help select OSA’s future leadership by voting in the OSA election for 2015 offices. The election for the 2015 OSA vice president and three directors at large will continue through 26 September 2014, 23:59 U.S. Eastern Daylight Time.  If you haven’t yet voted, please read the candidates’ profiles and personal statements, and then submit your vote.  Every vote makes a difference!

Election results will be announced on Tuesday, 21 October 2014, at the OSA Annual Business Meeting during the 2014 Frontiers in Optics/OSA Annual Meeting in Tucson, Arizona, USA.  Results will be available on the OSA website in late October.

*Individual, Emeritus and Recent Graduate members in good standing as of 1 September 2014 are eligible to vote in this election.  Student and Youth Educator members are not eligible to vote.

OSA International Workshop on Compact EUV & X-Ray Light Sources, 30-31 October 2014

This workshop is a follow-up to the recent OSA Compact EUV and X-Ray Light Sources Incubator Meeting, which was held in November 2013, where both light source developers and end-users gathered to discuss and address the scientific and technical challenges of sources and peripherals. The result was an understanding of the applications, requirements, and current development status of compact sources.

The goal of the 2014 workshop is to build upon the momentum and the enthusiasm created by the past OSA Incubator by bringing together compact light source developers, potential users, and others interested in this new field to present their work, to exchange ideas, and to network with colleagues.

The workshop will be held at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C., and is collocated with the 2014 International Symposium on Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography.

OSA Member News: Philip Russell

Philip RussellPhilip Russell has been awarded the 2014 Berthold Leibinger Future Prize for his “invention of, and outstanding research on, photonic crystal fibres (PCF).” The prize is awarded biannually by the Berthold Leibinger Foundation and recognizes outstanding milestones in research with applications of lasers.

Tingye LiThe OSA Foundation will award the first Tingye Li Innovation Prize in 2015. Honoring the global impact Dr. Li made to the field of optics and photonics, this prize will be presented to a student or young professional who has demonstrated innovative ideas in their research via a paper submitted for consideration during the Optical Fiber Communication (OFC) Conference or the CLEO Conference.

Gordon jamesEstablished in 2014 with the support of the Gordon family, the James P. Gordon Memorial Speakership will pay tribute to Dr. Gordon for his numerous high-impact contributions to the field of Quantum Optics.

Each year the James P. Gordon Memorial Speakership will be bestowed upon an invited speaker at the CLEO Conference in the area of quantum information and quantum optics. The recipient will receive an honorarium and their presentation will then be recorded and made available online as an educational resource for the next generation of optics and photonics leaders.

Low Level Light Therapy: The Path Forward, 20-22 August 2014
Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT), a light therapy using visible and NIR radiation, is almost 50 years old. Hundreds of positive clinical trials and thousands of laboratory studies have been published, yet LLLT has not been adopted by mainstream medicine. This meeting will address the reasons for this and identify paths forward.

The Fundamental Limits of Optical Energy Conversion, 12-14 November 2014
This Incubator will bring together experts from various fields to explore thermodynamic limits of optical energy conversion platforms and search for new platforms that overcome those limits.

Quantitative Modeling of Frequency-comb Sources, 19-21 November 2014
The purpose of this Incubator is to examine diverse sources of precision frequency combs and establish the basis for broadly applicable models of their operation, with the goal of understanding parameters that will enable optimized designs suited to real-world applications. It will also investigate the effects of inherent and environmental noise and explore new wavelength ranges and different morphologies suited to different metrological applications.
