Philip Russell attended the International OSA Network of Students (IONS) conference in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico on 3 September to deliver an invited talk titled “Enhancing light-matter interactions using photonic crystal fibres” and meet with students. The OSA Student Chapter CICESE hosted the meeting which was the first IONS in Mexico. Philip was also a plenary speaker at the Mexican Optics and Photonics Meeting (MOPM), organized by the Mexican Academy of Optics (AMO) from 4-6 September 2013.

The deadline for most OSA Awards is 1 October 2013. We encourage you to highlight excellence in the community by nominating a colleague for one of 20 awards and medals that acknowledge a broad array of contributions and achievements. A full list of all OSA awards and medals can be found on-line.

The Optical Society Implements Industry-Based Tracking System for Government-Funded Research

OSA has implemented a new service that enables easy reporting of funding sources for scholarly research articles published in its portfolio of peer-reviewed journals. This newly launched “FundRef” service from CrossRef enables authors to specify the funding agency that their research was supported by, which in turn allows the agencies to track adherence to their policies, research institutions to better document researcher productivity and publishers to analyze the sources of funding for their published content.

The OSA Board of Directors recently approved the renaming of the Teacher Member Category to “Youth Educator” to accurately reflect its classification. An OSA Youth Educator Member is defined as “any primary, secondary school or other youth educator who has a continuing interest in optics and photonics education.” OSA looks forward to introducing new benefits and services to further serve its community of youth educators. OSA invites you to join the Member Advisory Network, an online-only volunteer group that provides feedback on current and proposed OSA products and services. Paul F. Forman Engineering Excellence Team Award Winner Announced

The Automotive Precision Optical Metrology Team from Zygo Corporation is the winner of the 2013 Paul F. Forman Engineering Excellence Team Award. The team is recognized for more than a decade of outstanding engineering work in developing custom optical metrology solutions for the automotive industry, enabling ever-higher precision engineering tolerances for improved emissions, reliability, and fuel efficiency. Comprised of members Frank Stanzel, Johann Ableitner, Herbert Grois, Robert Sachs, and Udo Waigand, the team will accept the award during the Plenary Session at OSA’s Annual Meeting, Frontiers in Optics (FiO 2013) in October. Are you interested in the field of Nonimaging Optics? Could you use $1,000? If you answered yes to either of these questions, enter the Nonimaging Optical Design Technical Group’s Silent Slide-Show Contest.

This is an online contest that challenges participants to show developments in the Nonimaging Optics field through a 30 slide (maximum) presentation, without the use of audio. Presentations will be judged based on clarity, work excellence, aesthetics, and the ability of the presenter to put the work in context. The winner selected by the judges will receive $1,000 USD, a free year of OSA membership, and one free admission to an OSA conference of the winner’s choice. Visitor’s choice winners will receive $750 USD, a free year of OSA membership, and one free admission to an OSA conference of the winner’s choice.

The recently launched National Photonics Initiative (NPI) has been focused on getting the word out to policy makers about the vital role optics and photonics plays in the national economy by bringing legislators out of the halls of Congress and into the labs. In August and September, OSA and SPIE helped organize events at the University of Central Florida (UCF) enter for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers (CREOL), the University of Arizona, the Rochester Regional Photonics Cluster (RRPC) Annual Meeting, and Directed Light Inc. in California.

On 7 August , CREOL, in conjunction with the Florida Photonics Cluster, hosted Congressman John Mica (R-FL) for an NPI discussion and a tour of CREOL’s facilities. Rep. Mica was so impressed by the experience; he agreed to author an op-ed on the need for investments in optical sciences.

On 14 August, the University of Arizona hosted Congressman Ron Barber (D-AZ) for a tour of the College of Optical Sciences and a question and answer session with over 60 local industry members, students and faculty.

At the RRPC Annual Meeting 5 September, Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (D-NY) gave the keynote address at an NPI panel discussion regarding the NPI’s goals and the role RRPC members can play in reaching them.

On 16 September, Congressman Mike Honda (D-CA) toured the laser technology company Directed Light in San Jose, CA. After the tour, Rep. Honda sat down with Directed Light staff to discuss the role of optics and photonics in advanced manufacturing and the need for continued investments.

Outreach efforts will continue later this month with Capitol Hill visits to multiple offices on 19 September. The European Physical Society (EPS) was created in 1968 as a place for physicist to make a positive contribution to European cultural unity.
