Help Shape U.S. Science Policy—Apply By 3 January!

Looking for a way to combine your interest in policy with your science background? Become an OSA Congressional Fellow! The program is a unique opportunity for scientists and engineers to gain experience in public policy and help influence decision makers. Congressional Fellows spend one year on Capitol Hill working as special legislative assistants on the staff of a Member of Congress, Senator, or Congressional Committee. Applicants must have a Ph.D. by September 1, 2014 to be eligible; mid- and late-career applicants are encouraged to apply as well. A competitive salary and a health insurance/travel stipend are provided. More information on the fellowship including how to apply can be found on OSA's website or by contacting Laura Kolton at lkolto@osa.org. Deadline for applications is Friday, January 3, 2014.

Precision Monitoring of Human Metabolism Workshop

MIRTHE, in collaboration with OSA, will host a workshop on Precision Monitoring of Human Metabolism, which will be composed of a morning session focusing on developing new tools for drug discovery and predicting efficacy in patient populations, and an afternoon session on environmental health. Leaders from industry, government, academia and clinical research, as well as the venture capital and technology investment community will discuss opportunities for the deployment and commercialization of sensors related to health and the environment. The program will also explore trends and developments for portable sensing platforms that are poised to provide valuable insights on how environmental factors and individuals' metabolism may play an important role. Come and share your ideas. The program will provide poster and networking sessions to interact with the experts in this field and discuss future research directions and commercialization opportunities.

Poster Submission: Please submit a short description of your technology to Bernadeta Wysocka at bwysocka@princeton.edu. Poster abstracts selection will be finalized by 31 January 2014.

December's OSA Member in the News: David Welch

OSA Fellow David Welch was recently awarded the JJ Thomson Medal for Electronics for his role as a pioneer in the field of optical devices and optical networks. His technical contributions and leadership first made it possible to commercially deploy reliable high power semiconductor lasers including 980 nm laser pumps, crucially needed in low noise optical amplifiers employed in DWDM systems. Welch later achieved the first commercial optoelectronics integrated circuit, several years ahead of any competing research or developments in the laboratory. These early devices marked a quantum step in optical system design. Today, photonic integrated circuits are essential to addressing the bandwidth and energy challenges faced by global telecommunications networks.

Advances in Optics and Photonics to be Indexed in Web of Science

The Optical Society (OSA) is pleased to announce that Advances in Optics and Photonics (AOP) has been approved to be indexed in Thomson Reuters' Web of Science™. Articles from Volume 1 are already indexed, and the rest of the Journal’s content will appear in the database soon. The Journal is expected to get its first Impact Factor in June 2014. OIDA's 20th Annual Forum Looks to 2014 and Beyond

The 20th OIDA Annual Forum featured U.S. policy makers in both its members-only and open registration sessions. Congressmen Mike Rogers and Lee Terry spoke on issues of cybersecurity and manufacturing, respectively. House committee staffer David Redl spoke on telecom policy. Redl works for the House Energy and Commerce Committee, under Representative Fred Upton.

A panel of agency representatives from DARPA, NIST, and NSF talked about their programs and the budgeting climate in Washington. OIDA’s government relations consultant, Matt Berzok, reported on the U.S. budget process, pointing out that the budget issues are not at all resolved, with more deadlines looming, and a threat of cuts in military spending coming next.

Bob Flanagan from the investment bank Raymond James presented on the state of financing of photonics companies today. Daryl Innis of Ovum and Tom Hausken of OIDA gave reviews of the optical communications and overall photonics markets, respectively. Perspectives from industry and around the world included Mark Nowell (CTO at Cisco), Chris Doerr (Acacia Communications), Jorge Pereira (CEO of Brazilian system vendor Padtec), Martin Schell (Fraunhofer HHI) and Dechao Zhang (China Mobile). The event concluded with a panel discussion about OIDA workshops from Steve Grubb (Infinera), Karen Liu (Ovum), and a view on the standards roadmaps going forward from Scott Kipp of Brocade.

Optics4Kids Website Re-launched

OSA is proud to announce the re-launch of www.Optics4Kids.org, an interactive website for students, parents, and educators. Its content is geared toward introducing young students to the world of optics and sparking their interest in science. In 2013, the site garnered over 100K unique visitors from around the world. The site is designed so that the visitors can easily navigate its pages and learn through a series of interactive activities. OSA President-Elect Philip Bucksbaum Attends the Australia and New Zealand Conference on Optics and Photonics

On a recent trip to Australia OSA President-Elect Phil Bucksbaum had the opportunity to meet with several OSA Student Chapters in the Melbourne area. Our thanks to the University of Melbourne and RMIT Chapters for hosting Phil. The Australia and New Zealand Conference on Optics and Photonics took place in Fremantle from 8 - 11 December. Phil delivered a plenary talk titled, "Ultrafast AMO Physics with strong laser fields: High Harmonic Generation and X-ray Free Electron Lasers".
