Optics and Photonics for a Better Life with Vision Impairment

Eastern Time (US & Canada) (UTC -05:00)In this talk Dr Danuta Sampson and Dr Scott Hollier hope to inspire everyone to consider an education in optics and photonics specifically focusing on how scientists can impact the life of people with vision impairment. They will discuss how optics and photonics support people with vision impairment and what the future can look like. They will also give discuss their journey into a scientific career in the hopes of providing inspiration that every person can pursue a career in science.
Dr Danuta Sampson is a researcher at Surrey University, UK, with expertise in optics, optical microscopy, vision science, ophthalmology and image processing. Her main research focuses on design and construction of optics-based instruments for biology and ophthalmology. Beyond research, she has been involved in many outreach programs aimed at raising general public interest in optics and science. She is a senior member and 2017 ambassador for the Optical Society.
Dr Scott Hollier specialises in the field of digital accessibility and is the author of the book ‘Outrunning the Night: a life journey of disability, determination and joy’. With a Ph.D. in Internet Studies and project management experience across the not-for-profit, corporate and government sectors, Scott is an internationally recognised researcher and speaker. Scott is legally blind and as such has both a professional and personal understanding of the importance of accessibility.
