The 6th Asia Pacific Optical Sensors Conference

Asia-Pacific Optical Sensors Conference (APOS) has been held every 18 months tracing back to 2008, and continues a series of conferences that are intended to provide a central forum for an update and review of technical information covering a wide range of optical sensing fields from fundamental researches to systems and application. The conference is open to researchers and professionals from not only Asia-Pacific Rim area but also all regions of the world.

The 6th APOS (APOS 2016) will be co-organized by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable Joint Stock Limited Company (YOFC). It is jointly sponsored by OSA, SPIE, IEEE Photonics Society, Chinese optical society (COS) and Chinese Society for Optical Engineering (CSOE). The APOS 2016 will be held in Shanghai, China from October 11 to 14, 2016.

Track 1: Physical Sensing
                            
Yosuke MizunoYosuke Mizuno, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, Brillouin scattering in plastic optical fibers and its applications to high-speed distributed sensing. 

Yosuke Mizuno received the B.E., M.E., and Dr.Eng. degrees in electronic engineering from the University of Tokyo in 2005, 2007, and 2010, respectively. From 2007 to 2010, he worked on Brillouin optical correlation-domain reflectometry (BOCDR) for his Dr.Eng. degree. From 2010 to 2012, as a JSPS Research Fellow (PD), he worked on polymer optics at Tokyo Institute of Technology as well as at BAM, Germany. Since 2012, he has been an Assistant Professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology, where he is active in fiber-optic sensing, polymer optics, and ultrasonics. He has authored more than 90 refereed journal papers and has given more than 10 invited talks at international conferences including OFS-23. In 2015, he achieved real-time one-end-access distributed Brillouin sensing using glass fibers, and he is currently attempting to add the numerous advantages of plastic optical fibers to this high-speed measurement system.

                                               

Track 2: Chemical and Gas Sensing
                             
Xuming ZhangXuming Zhang, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong, Microfluidics for photochemical harvesting of solar energy

Xuming Zhang received the BEng degree in Precision Mechanical Engineering from the University of Science & Technology of China (USTC) in 1994, and Ph.D. degree from School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in 2006. He is currently an associate professor with Department of Applied Physics, Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He has published more than 70 journal papers and has co-authored one book on photonic MEMS. His research interests cover mainly microfluidics, sensors, biomimetics and green energy.

                               

Track 3: Biological/Biomedical Sensing and Imaging                       

Taejoong EomTaejoong Eom, Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, Korea, Real time optical imaging for biomedical informatics

T. J. Eom was born in Busan, Korea. He received the Diploma in Electronics from Pusan National University, Korea, in 1998, and received M.S and Ph. D degrees in in Department of Informations and Communications Engineering from the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), Korea, in 2000 and 2005, respectivly. He worked in Korea Photonics Technology Institute (KOPTI), Korea in 2004 as Researcher and worked in Beckman Laser Institute of University California, Irvine in 2008 as Research Scientitst. From 2005, he was working in Advanced Photonics Research Institute (APRI) of GIST, Korea where he is Principal Research Scientist. He is now working as Research Scientist in Department of Biomedical Engineering of Washington University in Saint Louis from 2011.

His current research areas are in fiber optics devices and a real time biomedial imaging based on an optical cohernece tomography and a photoacoustic microscopy.

                          

Track 4: Integrated Technologies for Sensing                     

Ming-Jun LiMing-Jun Li, Corning Inc., USAPhotonic component integration in multi-core flat fibers

Dr. Ming-Jun Li joined Corning in 1991 and is currently a Corning Corporate Fellow. He has been a key inventor of many optical fibers and fiber products for optical communications and sensing. These includes bend-insensitive ClearCurve® optical fibers, which received the R&D 100 Award and was selected by Time magazine’s “Best Inventions of the Year”; and LEAF® fiber, which won four industrial awards and was deployed with more than 30 million of kilometers of fiber in long haul networks. Dr. Li is a Fellow of Optical Society of America and IEEE. He has served as a Deputy Editor, Coordinating Committee Member and Associate Editor of the Journal of Lightwave Technology. He has been also served as a committee chair or member for many international conferences. Dr. Li holds over 100 U.S. patents and has published 3 book chapters and authored and coauthored over 200 technical papers in journals and conferences.

                               

Track 5: Specialty Optical Fibers for Sensing                       

Hua-yaw TamHua-yaw Tam, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong, Specialty Optical Fibre Sensors and Their Applications

Hwayaw Tam, obtained his B.Sc. and Ph.D. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from The University of Manchester (UK).  From 1989 to 1993 he was with Hirst Research Center, GEC-Marconi Ltd. (London) and worked on WDM optical components and systems, and erbium optical fiber amplifiers.  He conducted pioneering works in optical fibre amplifiers, invented & patented the low-loss splicing technique for erbium-doped fibres, which enhanced the performance of optical amplifiers significantly. In 1992, he built two of the first batch of optical amplifiers for Italian PTT.
Prof. Tam joined The Hong Kong Polytechnic in 1993 and currently is the Department Head and Chair Professor of Photonics at the Department of Electrical Engineering, and Director of the Photonic Research Centre at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Tam established several world-class research facilities at PolyU, including two fibre-drawing towers for fabrication of photonics crystal fibres and polymer optical fibres, an ultra high-speed communication laboratory, and laser platforms for the fabrication of advanced fibre gratings. His current research interests include fabrication of specialty optical silica fibres and polymer fibres, optical fibre communications, and fibre sensor systems based on fibre Bragg gratings and photonic crystal fibres. Recently, his team invented a novel polymer optical fibre which permits low energy fibre grating inscription 1,000 times faster than published works. Prof. Tam published more than 500 technical papers and awarded/applied about 20 patents, has extensive international research collaborations with many universities around the world and is a keynote/invited speaker at more than 40 international conferences.

Since 2000, five photonics companies were successfully spin-off from his research centre. Recently, Tam co-founded Volant Railway Technologies Co. Ltd whose main business is to offer complete innovative and disruptive technology that provides aggregation of benefits of proprietary condition-monitoring systems to the Railway Industry.  In 2014, Prof. Tam’s team constructed the world’s first city-wide fibre-optic sensing network for condition-based monitoring of five metro systems in Hong Kong.  Similar systems will be built to monitor trains in Singapore in 2016, and Sydney in 2017.

Tam has also installed several structural health monitoring systems, including an FBG-based SHM system for the 610-m tall Canton Tower in Guangzhou, China and several condition-monitoring systems for railways in Hong Kong, India, Taiwan, and for high-speed trains (350km/hr) in the China mainland. Prof. Tam won numerous international awards for his inventions, and is the Third Prize Winner of the Berthold Leibinger Innovationspreis 2014.  Berthold Leibinger Innovationspreis is a biennial event and it is one of the highest remunerated international innovation prizes for laser technology.  Prof. Tam is a Fellow of the Optical Society.

Hai XiaoHai Xiao, Clemson University, USA, Integration of Functional Nanomaterials with Fiber Devices for Sensing Applications

Hai Xiao is the Bell Distinguished professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Clemson University. He received his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Virginia Tech in 2000 and his MS and BS degrees in Precision Instrument and Engineering from Tianjin University, China. His research interests mainly focus on novel sensors and instrumentation for applications in energy, intelligent infrastructure, clean environment, and biomedical sensing/imaging. Dr. Xiao has co-authored over 200 publications and served as the PI or Co-PI of 30 research projects. Dr. Xiao is the recipient of a number of prestigious awards including the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Program (YIP) Award in 2006 and the R&D 100 Award in 2004. 

               

Track 8: Distributed, Multiplexed and Networked Sensing                                         

Luc ThevenazLuc Thevenaz, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Switzerland, Future trends in distributed fiber sensing

Luc Thévenaz received the M.Sc. degree and the Ph.D. degree in physics from the University of Geneva, Switzerland. In 1988 he joined the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne (EPFL) where he currently leads a research group involved in photonics, namely fiber optics and optical sensing. Research topics include fiber sensors, slow & fast light, nonlinear fiber optics and laser spectroscopy in gases. He contributed to the development of Brillouin distributed fiber sensing by proposing innovative concepts pushing beyond barriers. In 2000 he co-founded the company Omnisens that is developing and commercializing advanced photonic instrumentation based on distributed fiber sensing. He is Fellow of the Optical Society, Senior Member of the IEEE and Editor in 3 major scientific journals.

Liu received the BSc degree in 1983 in Electronic Engineering, Shandong University, China and PhD in 1999 at Materials Engineering Department, Brunel Univ. UK. Currently associated with Laser Institute, Shandong Academy of Science. Director of Shandong Optical Fibre Sensor Key Lab, founder of Shandong Micro-Sensor Photonics Ltd (www.iss-ms.com). Recent R&D interests focus on fibre optic gas and physical sensors for mining and industrial safety applications. Author and co-author of over 10 patents and 100 papers in the OFS field.

Abstract:
Fiber Bragg gratings have been proven to be extremely versatile elements for manifold sensing applications. They provide localized and fiber integrated sensing functionalities in combination with easy multiplexing capabilities. Applications for many different physical parameters and stability also under extreme conditions have been shown. Such attractive properties have resulted successfully in specific commercialization activities in Germany which provide a good example how to develop industries in the field of optical sensing.
Biography:

Hartmut Bartelt graduated in Physics from University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (Germany) in 1976 and received his PhD for research on wavelength multiplexed optical signal processing in 1980. From 1981 to 1982 he worked as a research assistant at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis (USA) in the field of volume holographic optical elements. In 1982 he returned to the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg to continue his research activities and in 1985 he joined the corporate research laboratories of Siemens AG in Erlangen (Germany).
In 1994 he was appointed professor for Modern Optics at the University of Jena (Germany) and became head of the Optics Division of the Institute for Physical High Technology (IPHT), now Department of Fiber Optics in the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology (IPHT). From 1999 until 2006 he served as director and since 2006 as deputy director of the institute. His research activities cover the fields of optical speciality fibres, micro and nano-structured fiber optics, fiber light sources, fiber Bragg gratings and fiber optical sensors.

 

Yan-qing LuYan-qing Lu, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Nanjing University, China, Liquid crystal for non-display photonic applications

Yan-qing Lu received both his BS and Ph.D. degrees from Nanjing University, China, in 1991 and 1996 respectively. He has five-year experiences in US and China telecomm industries. He designed and developed a serial of liquid crystal based fiber-optic devices with his colleagues, which include variable optical attenuators, variable Mux/Demux, DWDM wavelength blocker etc. He is currently a Changjiang distinguished professor at Nanjing University and a Fellow of OSA. His research interests include liquid crystal photonics, fiber optics and nonlinear optics. He is the author or co-author of ~150 peer-reviewed papers in Science, Adv. Mater., Optica, Phys. Rev., Appl. Phys. Lett., Opt. Lett. etc. with over 2000 citations. He also holds more than 40 domestic or international patents or pending patents.

 

Kaoru MinoshimaKaoru Minoshima, University of Electro-Communications (UEC), Japan, Ultra-precision control of optical waves by use of fiber-based frequency combs and its application

Kaoru Minoshima is a Professor at the University of Electro-Communications (UEC), Tokyo, Japan, since 2013. She is also the Research Director of MINOSHIMA Intelligent Optical Synthesizer Project (IOS), Exploratory Research for Advanced Technology (ERATO), Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). She received her Ph.D. degrees from the University of Tokyo in 1993, and joined the National Research Laboratory of Metrology (NRLM), which was reorganized to the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), where she has served as Group Leader and Bureau Manager until 2013. She also served as a Visiting Professor at the University of Bordeaux I, France (1996), a Visiting Scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA (2000-2001), and a guest professor at the Tokyo University of Science (2007-2013).

Her areas of research are ultrafast optical science and technology and their application to optical metrology, particularly time-resolved imaging, generation and application of frequency combs.

She received the Prize for Science and Technology given by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), Japan, in 2008, and the first Women Scientists Award from the Japan Society of Applied Physics (JSAP) in 2010, and so on. She served as several international committees including the General Co-Chair of the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO) 2011. She is a member of the Science Council of Japan and a Fellow of the Optical Society (OSA) and JSAP.
