Advanced Photonics Congress Letter of Invitation Request Form

The visa application process to enter the United States has become subjected to greater degrees of scrutiny than in the past. For this reason, the application process can take up to six months or more. You will need to apply for your visa as early as possible but no later than three months before you wish to enter the United States. One factor contributing to the increase in the processing time is a personal interview that is now required for most applicants as a standard part of visa processing. Once it is known that a visa is necessary for travel, the individual needs to contact the embassy or consulate to schedule an appointment for screening. OSA is not able to contact U.S. embassies in support of an individual attempting to gain entry into the host country to attend the conference.

For detailed information about applying for a visa refer to the U.S. Department of State website and the National Academies International Visitors Office website.

To get from San Juan Munoz Airport to your destination you have the option of renting a car, taking a taxi or limo or using one of the many door-to-door shuttles or courtesy hotel shuttles available at the Airport.
Taxis:

Dozens of taxis line up outside the airport to meet arriving flights on the lower level, so you never have to wait. There are set fares for destinations within San Juan; for other destinations, the cost of the trip should be determined by the taxi meter. The island's Puerto Rico Tourism Company (Transportation Division; tel. +1 787.999.2100) establishes the flat rates between the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport and major tourist zones, so make sure to ask your taxi driver. Taxi service from the airport is quite well regulated, with a dispatcher handing you a ticket detailing your costs. These also include baggage costs (50¢ for each of the first three bags, then $1 per bag) and a 10% to 15% tip is expected.

About Puerto Rico

Experience much more than just the Congress!

Over the past five centuries the converging cultures of the Caribbean Indians, Spain, Africa, and North America have blended to create a uniquely Puerto Rican heritage evident in its food, music, language, architecture, religion, lifestyles, and arts and crafts.

The typical cuisine of Puerto Rico, known as comida criolla, is a unique blend of the cooking styles of all Island`s various ethnic settlers. The mingling of flavors and ingredients passed from generation to generation began with the Arawak and Taino Indians who started the tradition of cooking with corn and root vegetables, and then the Spanish influenced the use of garbanzo beans, rice, cilantro and garlic, while the African slaves brought with them pigeon peas, and starchy vegetables such as yautia and plantains--all of which have become staples of Puerto Rican fare.
Puerto Rico SunsetPuerto Ricans take their music seriously and its almost impossible to keep your body still when the rhythmic beats of Salsa and Merengue fill the air, as they so often do. Besides the sexy up-tempo Salsa, you should also keep an ear open for Bomba and Plena, two popular types of folk music that originated with slave groups and are coupled with dance. Seis is another old form of folk music with a dance-and-chant style.

In Puerto Rico everyone speaks Spanish and many speak English, but it’s also not uncommon to mix a little bit of the two for a uniquely characteristic and to some, endearing Spanglish.

The Island`s architecture speaks volumes of the cultural diversity and a tour of Puerto Rico to look at the facades and homes almost tells a tale of the evolving lifestyles in the last centuries.

Art, as music, plays a major role in everyday life in Puerto Rico and there is a plethora of unique mediums, styles and crafts and distinguished artists and local artisans that hail from Puerto Rico. There is also probably no other Caribbean Island with a greater number of museums and galleries or festivals dedicated to local artisans and their crafts.
