Theoretical and Experimental Investigation, and Numerical Modeling of Human Visual Acuity

Cataract surgery is one of the most common surgical procedures, during which the patient’s crystalline lens, which has become opaque due to increased light scattering, is replaced with an artificial IntraOcular Lens (IOL). Researchers are developing new solutions to provide more comfortable visual experience for cataract patients than achievable with currently available products. To this end, besides the objective optical and mechanical parameters of the eye, the entire visual train has to be modeled to determine the vision quality as observed by a human subject. Ophthalmologists quantify this subjective vision quality by the visual acuity value. Therefore, we developed a new neuro-physiological vision model that determines monocular foveal visual acuity based on the wavefront aberration of the eye. Using simulated wavefront aberration input, this new model makes it possible to optimize visual optical devices (e.g. IOLs) directly for improved visual acuity, whilst in cases when the wavefront aberration is clinically measured, the model provides a new objective alternative of subjective letter-recognition-based acuity tests. During this presentation, we will review the model together with our new correlation-based evaluation protocol that significantly decreases the uncertainty of vision tests without causing systematic offset relative to the standard method, and can be applied both in everyday medical practice and in scientific research.

Speaker

Csilla Timar-Fulep, Optical Engineer, Zemax

Csilla is an optical engineer in the Customer Success Department at Zemax, specialized in life science applications. Csilla joined Zemax in January 2020, after finishing her PhD in December 2019. She graduated as a physicist in 2015 from the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Hungary. During her bachelor studies her major was theoretical physics, which provided a strong analytical and mathematical background. Csilla holds a master's in medical physics, which focused on medical image processing and radiation therapy. The research topic of her PhD was the theoretical and experimental investigation, and numerical simulation of human visual acuity.
