Laser and Photonics Systems to Enable Quantum 2.0 and More

The spatial and temporal coherence of laser light and the unique properties of photons have enabled economic and/or performance disruption in fields including telecommunication, data storage, imaging, biomedicine and others.  In the nascent field of quantum information science and technology, nearly all of the contemplated and prototyped systems rely on specialized lasers and photonics.  In this talk I will preset new capabilities that Vescent is providing to both accelerate the development of these potentially disruptive systems and, for the first time, for some of these systems to “leave the lab” in real-world deployed environments.  Specifically, I will present on compact laser, photonic, and control electronics for “quantum 2.0” systems such as gravimeters, sensors, computers, and clocks.  I will describe new, low size, weight, and power optical frequency combs that are rugged and deployable for applications such as dual-comb spectroscopy, two-way time transfer, and compact optical atomic clocks.  Rugged, easy-to-use, and deployable lasers and photonics, often locked to precise atomic transitions, will enable new disruptions with quantum systems and more.

Speaker

Scott Davis, CEO, Vescent Photonics LLC

Dr. Davis is a physicist entrepreneur with an emphasis on transitioning new technology from the laboratory to the marketplace.  He has focused his career on inventing, developing, and commercializing a wide variety of technologies.  Many of these technologies and products such as compact laser systems for trapping and cooling atoms, compact and deployable frequency combs, and miniature spectroscopic standards are tools aimed at furthering the development and deployment of quantum-based systems.  He has over 30 refereed papers, has co-authored two book chapters, and has twenty-seven patents or patents pending.

Dr. Davis received his Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from the University of Colorado, working at JILA in Boulder, CO and his Bachelor of Arts degree from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT.  He co-founded Vescent Photonics in 2002 and after a four-year sabbatical at Analog Devices returned to Vescent as CEO in 2020.
