FBG-Based Fiber Optic Sensing for Demanding Industrial Applications

Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensing systems are capable of state-of-the-art performance in terms of speed, number of sensors, algorithmic software, and data analytics. FBG sensors are deployed for the real-time measurement of physical, chemical and biological parameters of interest. The systems are comprised of three elements, namely a photonic signal analyzer called the interrogator, an optical fiber cable with integrated sensors and application-specific algorithmic software for data analytics. Leveraging the latest technology advances, strains to ±10,000 micro-strain (μƐ) with sub-μƐ resolution, pressures to 1 kBar with <0.0.05 psi resolution, temperatures from -270°C to 1000°C with >99.9% measurement accuracy, vibration spectra, as well as high-bandwidth (DC to MHz range) acoustic emission (AE) and ultrasonic signals can be measured. FBG sensing is being rapidly adopted across industrial applications where there exists a technology gap between conventional sensors and the growing need for lightweight, multiplexable, ‘light-speed’ sensor networks with intelligent analytics to inform decision-making.
