As the demand for internet capacity continues to rise, the transport network industry has responded with two new technologies: coherent transmission and multi-carrier super-channels. Coherent transmission offers an order of magnitude increase in fiber capacity, and answers the question "how do we get to 100Gb/s transmission?". Super-channels are an evolution in DWDM in which multiple optical carriers, implemented on a single line card, are combined to create an aggregate channel at much higher data rates than 100G. Super-channels allow massive optical capacity to be deployed in an operationally scalable way, and are the industry’s best, and most practical answer to the question "how do we scale beyond 100Gb/s?".
