Honoring Nina Byers (deceased)
UCLA

Submitted by Prof. Anne Tropper University of Southampton

Nina Byers taught me quantum mechanics at Oxford in 1973. She was a Visiting Fellow from UCLA: in 8 tutorials she transformed my view of physics, and my estimation of my own ability. My previous Somerville tutorials had been discouraging affairs, in which I was addressed as 'Miss Tropper', which I hated. Nina exploded in my education like a firework. Her parting shot to me was the instruction 'Do a PhD'. I never met Nina again, and she died in 2014. I owe her my entire professional life.
