Professor Susan Houde-Walter has had a significant influence as teacher, researcher, past president of the OSA, and co-founder and CEO of Lasermax. She was very generous with her time, and she let me bother her with plenty of questions on optics. One day, she dropped me a note together with a newspaper article about Nobel laureate Steven Chu, which stated that, as a student, Dr. Chu inundated his professors with lots of questions. Prof. Houde-Walter's note read, "This gives you license."
