Katharine Blodgett Gebbie

Katharine Gebbie (1932-2016) was my leader at NIST for more than 30 years. She was the best laboratory director anyone could want. After a distinguished career in astrophysics, she devoted herself to creating the best research environment possible for her scientists. She succeeded beyond belief: 4 Nobel prizes, 2 MacArthur Foundation awards, and many other accolades to her people, gave evidence of the success of her formula: hire the best; give them the resources they need; let them work.
