Honoring Sylvia Freiman
Submitted by C. David Chaffee Science Writer
Mrs. Freiman was my fourth grade teacher in the 1960s. I wrote a paper, "Mrs. Freiman's Class Goes to the Moon." She was so delighted with it that she had me read it in front of the whole class, standing behind me with a big smile on her face. I had never received any recognition before, certainly not for anything I had written. I have never forgotten her encouragement. It was a tipping point, the grades went up, the ideas began to flow. It was the first step toward becoming a science writer.
