Daniel Kleppner was more than a mentor, he was an inspiration and a hero. Coming to his laboratory with a fresh bachelor's degree was an awakening. Dan always kept his students motivated with the big picture, resulting in learning for a lifetime. In addition to being an inspirational physicist, he was a gentleman and an intellectual. When Dan won the OSA Meggers Award, he split the prize money with his students! I am proud and fortunate to have been his student and treasure the experiences.
