While Tom was not my direct supervisor at NRL, he became a mentor that helped to shape my early career, and continues to mentor me to this day. Tom has an astute ability to see the broad picture for a vast array of research, and still had an uncanny ability to ask the pointed questions that made you investigate and think about a program in ways that might not have been visible from your current perspective. He taught how to diffuse tough discussions to professional dialogue through his demeanor.
