Mike Adams was an early mentor and role model, from my undergraduate project through my doctoral work at Southampton University. With great patience, he showed me what research was all about. He reinforced my interest in guided-wave optics with encouragement, one-to-one tutorials and great stories about his scientific background. I consider myself very fortunate to have received this grounding from such a teacher; it has provided me with an enduring mental compass to guide me through my career.
