Report coverThe European Commission has identified six “Key Enabling Technologies”, or KETs, as instrumental to modernize Europe’s industrial base and in driving the development of entirely new industries.  The European strategy of KETs was adopted in 2012 to boost the industrial deployment of these technologies within Europe.  Photonics was chosen as one of the six KETs, which gives it a special status within one of the European Commission funding programs.  It also raises the profile of photonics as a key technology more generally, across and beyond Europe.

This report is the first of this kind for the European Commission on its six “Key Enabling Technologies”, or KETs.  It reports on metrics showing the relative position of the EU-28 countries in terms of their technology, trade, production, and commercial revenues of each KET.  Only relative positions are presented, not absolute values.  Comparisons are made to the United States, Japan, Korea, and China, and among the E.U. member countries.
