Wei-Ping Huang received the B.S. degree with national honors in electronics from Shandong University, Jinan, China, in 1982, the M.S. degree in electrical engineering with major in photonics from the University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, China, in 1984, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering with major in photonics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, in 1989.
He was an Assistant Professor in 1989, an Associate Professor in 1992, and a Professor in 1996 with the University of Waterloo, Canada. From 1999 to 2013, he was Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, McMaster University, Canada, leading the photonics research group. He was appointed Dean of School of Information Sciences and Engineering, Shandong University, China in 2013.
He co-founded several technology ventures and assumed executive and advisory roles through the various stages of business. He is currently Chairman, Hisense Broadband Multimedia Technology Co. and also Chief Scientist, Hisense Group Co.
Huang is internationally known for his contributions and expertise for photonic devices and integrated circuits, particularly in the computer-aided-design technologies for photonic devices and ICs. He is credited for the invention, development and commercialization of a number of numerical models and algorithms for simulation of optical waveguides such as non-orthogonal coupled mode theory, the vector beam propagation method and the scalar and semi-vector finite difference time domain method, etc. He has authored and coauthored over 200 journal papers and 100 conference papers, and he is the holder of seven U.S. patents. He is recognized for his roles and achievement for developing, promoting and commercializing enabling technologies and applications in fiber to the homes. He was elected as a Cheung Kong Scholar in 2000 and as a Thousand Talent Scholar in 2013.
