Featured Speaker: Martin Seifert, President, Nufern
Martin Seifert is the president of Nufern in East Granby, Connecticut, which was founded in 2000 as a Telco specialty fiber house. Nufern successfully changed to a fiber laser and amplifier supplier for the industrial and military/aerospace markets in 2003, and was sold to Rofin in early 2008. In 2010, Nufern expanded it’s product family by acquiring the fiber optic gyroscope coil winding business of Optelecom-NKF. While Seifert has predominantly been a business leader for the last twenty nine years, he has a technical background and is named on a number of Nufern fiber, chip, and laser patents.
Prior to Nufern Seifert was the President and GM of Lucent Specialty Fibers, a position which came as a result of his successful turnaround of the foundering SpecTran specialty optical fiber manufacturing company and its subsequent sale to Lucent in 1999. In 1992 Seifert started and managed a successful combined hardware and software business at Rockwell where he was also involved with merger, acquisition, and divestiture activities. Before being recruited to turn around SpecTran, he was COO of Schweitzer Engineering Labs, a 350-person private company making mission critical microprocessor based control and protection systems. From 1984 to 1989 Seifert managed a drives and control system service organization within Bucyrus-Erie.
Martin Seifert's interview.
Founded in March 2000, Nufern is a leading U.S. manufacturer of specialty optical fibers, fiber-optic coils, fiber lasers and amplifiers serving diverse markets. With manufacturing facilities located at its headquarters in East Granby, Connecticut, USA, Nufern has the experience, resources, and facilities required to design, manufacture, test and qualify all of its products.
Nufern is committed to quality and continuous improvement. After diligently working to achieve telcordia, flight and mission critical space qualifications the team achieved ISO 9001:2000 certification in 2007. From research and development to volume production, Nufern’s team and infrastructure provides quality, reliability, and repeatability in manufacturing. Nufern’s position as an independent integrated one stop manufacturer assures customers of a secure supply of the same high-performance products time after time. Nufern products include over 300 standard fibers and range from sub-assemblies to complete turn-key fiber lasers and amplifiers. Nufern’s integrated fiber and fiber laser teams also provide rapid and cost-effective OEM fiber laser design, assembly and contract manufacturing services. With the introduction of the NukW Laser Nufern has become second only to one other complete fiber laser supplier in the world.
Detailed fiber characterization and testing to Telcordia standards are fundamental aspects of Nufern’s qualification process. A class 100,000 environment in MCVD and class 100 micro-environment in fiber draw ensures high fiber strength and high yield at the customers’ application level. Nufern’s in-house testing capabilities include multiple full laser labs, environmentally controlled test labs, extensive modern testing and measurement equipment, and a Telcordia specified qualification facility, resulting in high performance, highly repeatable products for our customers.
