SCiO is a unique molecular scanner that fits in the palm of your hand. It is simple to use and gives any person the ability to perform sophisticated chemometric analysis with the touch of the button. It basically gives any person access to important information about nutrition, medicine, hazardous chemicals, or any material that you could traditionally analyze using lab spectrometer. Over 15,000 pre-ordered their device and among them there are over 1,300 developers, eager to develop new applications for the new technology.
SCiO expends the human possibilities using advanced mass-production optics and electronics. It’s giving users a “sixth-sense” ability that only companies used to have. Tell us about how your technology is unique? What makes it stand out? How do you differentiate it from other similar technologies?
SCiO is the first handheld spectrometer that has full sharing of database functionality. For example, a developer in Hawaii could make an application that gives nutritional information about tropical fruits while a user in china could use it to analyze his imported tropical fruits. In another case, a pharmaceutical company could create an app for identifying its unique drug, and a patient, anywhere in the world, could tell if the drug he possesses is real or fake.

When first launched, did your technology make a transformational change for the end-user or was it an advancement of the prior art? Describe this.
The users of SCiO (so far developers) are amazed by the technology. They are creating apps that could transform the way we think about food, medicine and quality and labeling of different materials. Basically, it totally changes the way we see and approach the world around us.
Of course, spectrometry (and chemometrics) is not new for science, but until now, it was not accessible for the common people.

Consumer Physics developed SCiO from scratch. We manufacture it on our own and sell it directly to consumers, developers and enterprises. Future plan is to embed the sensor in wireless connected devices.
