Division Overview

This division incorporates numerous disciplines in the design of optical components and systems, and the development of instrumentation to characterize the performance of optical components, subsystems and systems. The development and testing of numerous passive optical components such as lens, thin films, waveguide, etc. are of interest to this group. As these components are assembled into subsystems such as telescopes, microscopes, cameras, etc., this division develops the techniques to accurately measure their performance as well as determining standardized approaches to these measurements. The use of lasers to weld or modify materials for applications such as manufacturing will be studied by this division. Component modeling for lens, optical subsystem (telescope etc.), and fiber structures optimized for impairment mediation, and the fabrication techniques and technology to manufacture optical components and subsystems will be within the purview of this group. Evolving special optical technologies such as x-ray, holographic and diffractive optics are also covered within this group.
