Trip Highlights

OSA Fellow Mario Marconi visited two institutions with the longest tradition in laser and optics research in Argentina, the CEILAP (in CITEFA) and the CIOp. Mario delivered presentations on his work in Talbot lithography and EUV time resolved holography as well as a summary of OSA’s mission, activities and plans for the centennial. He also had the opportunity to discuss professional development opportunities with students and visit several OSA Student Chapters.

OSA Fellow Gabriel Popescu travelled to Romania to participate and present in a number of optics events. He delivered a talk titled “Spatial Light Interference Microscopy (SLIM): basic and clinical biomedical applications” during the ROMOPTO Conference, which included an opening address from the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis. Gabriel also visited the International Center for Biodynamics, the National Institute for Atomic Physics and the Romanian Academy Institute of Biochemistry, giving talks, participating in seminars and encouraging students to become more active with the local OSA chapter.

OSA Fellow Marvin Klein spent a week in Brazil and delivered a talk entitle “Principles and Applications of Laser Ultrasonics” at five universities in the Sao Paulo region.  Klein toured labs, met with students and professors, and visited with OSA Student Chapters at Instituto de Estudos Avançados, São José dos Campos, Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Campinas and Universidade Tecológica Federal do Paraná.  He was very impressed by the high level of research in optics and photonics taking place in Brazil.
