In Memoriam: Marcus Turowski, 1983-2016

Marcus Turowski tragically passed away on 19 June 2016 while hiking the Ventana Canyon Trail in the Santa Catalina Mountains north of Tucson, Arizona, USA. Turowski and colleagues from Laser Zentrum Hannover (Germany) were attending The Optical Society’s Optical Interference Coating (OIC) Conference and Exhibition. Turowski was a member of Photonic Materials group within the Laser Component Division of Research and Development at Laser Zentrum Hannover. His team leader and frequent collaborator was Marco Jupé.
Turowski was a globally respected researcher in the area of simulations and modeling of thin film technologies. He was well-published and active in the Optical Coatings research community. His research efforts led to pre-production designs and process controls for ion-based coating systems.
Turowski had served as a presenter and committee member for OIC in 2013 and was scheduled to again present his work at the conference. Turowski will be missed by his colleagues and collaborators within the optics and photonics community.
