In Memoriam: Stefan Günster, 1960-2016

Stefan Günster, PhD, tragically passed away on 19 June 2016 while hiking the Ventana Canyon Trail in the Santa Catalina Mountains north of Tucson, Arizona, USA.  Günster and colleagues from Laser Zentrum Hannover (Germany) were attending The Optical Society’s Optical Interference Coating (OIC) Conference and Exhibition.  Günster went hiking with Marcus Turowski and Marco Jupe also from Laser Zentrum Hannover and became overcome with heat exhaustion due to the extreme temperatures. 

Günster was the head of the Coatings group within the Laser Component Division of Research and Development at Laser Zentrum Hannover.  He was well known for his expertise in laser coatings and had worked on the development and production of special optical coatings for applications in space, laser systems, and photonic devices. He received his PhD degree from the University of Hannover and had been with Laser Zentrum Hannover since 1994. 

Günster had published numerous papers and was a regular contributor to the optics and photonics community.  OSA and the community mourns his loss and sends condolences to his family and colleagues on his passing.
