    The Optical Society of America (OSA) Foundation Board of Directors recently approved funding for three new optics-related programs for 2007 through 2009. These grants will provide funds for optics curriculum for EASTCONN, a non-profit education service center; for an optics education and hands-on demonstration program developed by the OSA Rochester (N.Y.) Local Section; and for the distribution of educational materials to developing nations.

    A team of researchers from the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School (HMS) have developed an optical device that allows them to peer through the eyes of a mouse and monitor the cells passing through its bloodstream.

    The Optical Society of America (OSA) Foundation is pleased to announce the renaming of OSA's Engineering Excellence Award to the Paul F. Forman Engineering Excellence Award. The new name honors the contributions to optical engineering by the late Paul Forman, co-founder of Zygo Corporation and OSA fellow.

    Microfluidics and Optical Trapping Integrated for the First Time in New Lab-On-A-Chip Research

    Researchers at Cornell University for the first time have integrated optical functions with microfluidic ones, enabling the sorting of particles by light. Reported in the Oct. 29 issue of Optics Express, due out Monday, the Cornell team showcases a new design for a "lab-on-a-chip" structure that provides the ability to move or sort particles using light.

    The Optical Society of America (OSA) debuted its first Corporate Member Pavilion at the Asia Optical Fiber Communication and Optoelectronic Exposition and Conference (AOE) in Shanghai, China this week. Six society corporate members are exhibiting in an 800-square-foot pavilion at the conference.
