  OSA, DPG Name David J. Wineland Winner of First Herbert Walther Award

  The Optical Society (OSA) and the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG) are proud to announce the inaugural Herbert Walther Award will be presented to David J. Wineland of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for his seminal contributions to quantum information physics and metrology, and the development of trapped ion techniques for applications to basic quantum phenomena, plasma physics and optical clocks.

  Improved Spectrometer Based on Nonlinear Optics

  Scientists at Stanford University and Japan’s National Institute of Informatics have created a new highly sensitive infrared spectrometer. The device converts light from the infrared part of the spectrum to the visible part, where the availability of superior optical detectors results in strongly improved sensing capabilities.

  AOE and APOC Join Forces to Become One Comprehensive Event

  IEEE/LEOS, OSA and SPIE today announced that the Asia Optical Fiber Communication and Optoelectronic Exposition and Conference (AOE) and Asia-Pacific Optical Communications (APOC) will combine to form one comprehensive conference and tradeshow exhibition. Taking place Nov. 1 – 6, 2009, in Shanghai, China, AOE/APOC will become the premier optical communications forum for those in the Pacific Rim.

  Silicon Optical Fiber Made Practical

  ROCHESTER, N.Y., Oct. 21 – The Optical Society (OSA) is pleased to announce that its members have elected J. Christopher Dainty, National Univ. of Ireland Galway, Ireland, as its 2009 vice president. During this year’s vote Neal Bergano, Tyco Telecommunications, USA; Christoph Harder, Harder and Partner, Switzerland; and Wilhelm Kaenders, Toptica Photonics AG, Germany, were also elected as new directors-at-large.

  OSA Foundation Establishes New Student Paper Competition to Honor Optics Pioneer Emil Wolf

  The OSA Foundation today announced the establishment of the Emil Wolf Outstanding Student Paper Competition. The new competition honors University of Rochester Professor Emil Wolf’s many contributions to science and the Optical Society (OSA). Awards will be given annually in recognition of innovation and research excellence to students presenting their work during OSA’s Annual Meeting, Frontiers in Optics (FiO).
