Nanoscopic Changes to Pancreatic Cells Reveal Cancer
    17 February 2009
A team of researchers in Chicago has developed a way to examine cell biopsies and detect never-before-seen signs of early-stage pancreatic cancer, according to a new paper in the Optical Society (OSA) journal Optics Letters.

  • Optics Express Debuts Astrophotonics Focus Issue Laser-Sculpted Optical Devices for Future Giant Telescopes
Optics Express Debuts Astrophotonics Focus Issue Laser-Sculpted Optical Devices for Future Giant Telescopes
    05 February 2009
Future telescopes, with mirrors half the size of a football field, will need special components to deal with the light they collect. Astronomers are turning to photonic devices that guide and manipulate light inside specially-designed materials. The greatest potential, which is described in the latest issue of Optics Express, the Optical Society’s (OSA) open-access journal, may lie in a laser-based technique that carves out micron-sized light pathways in three dimensions.

  • De-Multiplexing to the Max 640 Gbits/second
    De-Multiplexing to the Max 640 Gbits/second
    03 February 2009
A new error-free speed-reading record using a compact ultra-fast component—640 Gbits/second (Gbps, or billion bits per second)—has now been established by a collaboration of scientists from Denmark and Australia, who report their results in the journal Optics Express, the Optical Society’s (OSA) open-access journal.

  • OFC/NFOEC 2009 Announces Plenary Session Speakers
OFC/NFOEC 2009 Announces Plenary Session Speakers
    03 February 2009

In late 2008, OSA Corporate Member companies were seen leveraging business partnerships and new business strategies to foster innovation and novel product offerings. This edition of Industry Newsmakers includes news from JDSU, Intel Capital, Fianium and more.

  • Tiny lasers get a notch up
Tiny lasers get a notch up
    27 January 2009
Tiny disk-shaped lasers as small as a speck of dust could one day beam information through optical computers. Unfortunately, a perfect disk will spray light out, not as a beam, but in all directions. New theoretical results, reported in the Optical Society (OSA) journal Optics Letters, explain how adding a small notch to the disk edge provides a single outlet for laser light to stream out.

  • OSA Foundation Partners with Rochester Local Section of OSA to Bring Optics Demonstrations to Worldwide Audience
OSA Foundation Partners with Rochester Local Section of OSA to Bring Optics Demonstrations to Worldwide Audience
    14 January 2009
The OSA Foundation (OSAF) announced today that its two-year partnership with the Rochester Local Section of OSA (ROSA) has resulted in the distribution of educational materials to more than 3,500 students in 17 countries through the groups’ Optics Education and Demonstrations Program.
