  Record-Speed Wireless Data Bridge Demonstrated: Takes High-Speed Communications the 'Last Mile'

  A team of researchers in Germany has created a new way to overcome many of the issues associated with bringing high-speed digital communications across challenging terrain and into remote areas, commonly referred to as the “last mile” problem. The researchers developed a record-speed wireless data bridge that transmits digital information much faster than today’s state-of-the-art systems.

  Four OSA Members Elected to the National Academy of Engineering

  Four members of the Optical Society (OSA) were recently elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in scientific research and engineering. They were among 66 new members and 10 foreign associates of the NAE in 2012.

  Transforming Computers of the Future with Optical Interconnects

  In order to build the next generation of very large supercomputers, it’s essential that scientists and engineers find a way to seamlessly scale computation performance without exceeding extraordinary power consumption. It is widely agreed that the major challenge to scaling future systems will no longer be the CMOS (Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) integrated circuit technology but rather the data movement among processors and memory. The rapidly evolving technology of photonic interconnects promises to deliver this increase in computing capabilities by providing ultra-high communication bandwidths with extreme energy efficiency and should therefore provide the impetus to move the technology from the lab into actual products.

  OSA Foundation Announces 2012 Corning Student Paper Competition Finalists

  The OSA Foundation and Corning Incorporated today announced the finalists of the Corning Outstanding Student Paper Competition, which recognizes student leaders in the field of optical communications. The winners will be announced at this year’s Optical Fiber Communication/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC) at the Los Angeles Convention Center, March 4-8.
