  • The OSA Foundation is pleased to announce the first award winners of the Emil Wolf Outstanding Student Paper Competition. Debuting at the Optical Society’s (OSA) Annual Meeting, Frontiers in Optics (FiO), one recipient was chosen from each of the seven FiO subcommittees.


  • Scientists and curiosity seekers who want to know what a partially or completely cloaked object would look like in real life can now get their wish -- virtually. A team of researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany has created a new visualization tool that can render a room containing such an object, showing the visual effects of such a cloaking mechanism and its imperfections.


  • The Optical Society (OSA), in conjunction with the House of Representatives’ Research & Development (R&D) Caucus, is hosting a Congressional briefing next week to discuss how solid-state lighting, such as light emitting diodes (LEDs), can significantly reduce the amount of energy used for residential, commercial and street lighting.


  • The US House of Representatives accepted an amendment yesterday by Rep. Suzanne Kosmas (D-Fla.) that would add photonics technology to the list of targeted industries eligible to receive federal grants under a new early-stage investment program.


  • The Optical Society (OSA) announced today that it has added a Senior Member category to its membership offerings. Senior membership provides well-established individuals with the opportunity to request a designation that recognizes their experience and professional accomplishments or service within their field.
